Four-Star contender Dora Gibbs-Rohorn has committed to Illinois Basketball, making it the second commitment of 2023 for coaches Brad Underwood and Fighting Illini.
Illinois basketball has been in the spotlight the past few seasons, and head coach Brad Underwood has been making waves since hiring him in 2017. The past two seasons have seen Illinois return to the big dance, winning the 2021 Big Ten Tournament ahead of the regulars. Season Crown for this past season.
Much of its success comes from gaining recent stars like Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn to gain a foothold in the recruiting avenue. Gibbs Lawhorn Underwood and crew landing power forward Amani Hansbury, the second four-star prospect committed to Illinois just one month ago. Gibbs-Lawhorn gave Illini another exciting piece on the backcourt. His experience has mostly come from his guard in points in recent years. He’s a certain top 100 recruit, and a significant addition, especially if he can continue to grow into a top-level shooter and ball his distributor. His scoring is already impressive and he’s looking to take it to the next level in his final season before college.
Looking at the big picture, Gibbs Lawhorn could play a key role in Illinois next year. Illini wants the young guard to improve on her RJ Melendez and Luke Goode on her, but Gibbs her lowhorn certainly allows her to spend a good amount of time on the floor as a freshman in 2023. But if he leaves college after one season, Gibbs Lawhorn could slip into that type of role.
Illinois landing these types of four-star recruits isn’t something that didn’t happen even five seasons ago. Gibbs-Lawhorn joins his Illini program which has been a big trend in recent years. He’s clearly happy with Underwood, his staff, and the culture of this program, and has the potential to become an impressive backcourt player in the Big Ten in the years to come.
