NBA player Tyrell Terry has announced his retirement from the sport, citing anxiety caused by the sport he no longer loves.

Terry wrote that a key factor was the strain sports were taking on his mental health.

“I have achieved incredible accomplishments, made unforgettable memories, made lifelong friends, but also experienced some of the darkest times of my life,” Terry wrote. Where I began to despise and question, it was more than those around me saw or knew. “

He also wrote about how anxiety affected him physically and made him dislike sports.

“I woke up feeling intrusive and nauseous and found myself struggling to breathe normally with a stone weighing more heavily on my chest than I could carry,” Terry wrote. . “This is just a brief description of the anxiety this sport has brought on me and I am grateful for all the doors that have opened for me, but for something I have fallen in love with, no more. We cannot continue this fight.”

Terry spent most of his first season in the NBA’s developing G League, playing just 11 games for the Mavs. He was released before his 2021-22 season and briefly signed with the Memphis Grizzlies.
