Expectations were high for the Los Angeles Lakers after being traded for Russell Westbrook last summer. His 33-49 record with which they finished the season was not only not good enough to make the playoffs, but the play-ins did not even qualify him for the tournament.
Westbrook maintained solid statistical averages in a reduced role during his first season with the Lakers. He averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists. But he struggled in nearly every area that didn’t show up in his score in the box, but in just three seconds he shot only 29.8% and average turnovers he averaged 3.8.
was there A message from the Lakers This suggests an interest in a rematch with Westbrook, but it’s clear they bought him multiple times throughout the offseason. But with the acquisition of Patrick Beverley, it’s become easier to play with more point guard options.
Regardless, a move from Westbrook appears to be what many expect the Lakers to do at some point. I have.
NBA analytics network We ranked the Lakers’ top trading partners for the deal that ended the failed Westbrook experiment. Among the ranked teams are: San Antonio Spursthird on the list, behind the Indiana Pacers and the Utah Jazz.
A key factor for the Spurs is that they still have plenty of salary cap space left. They can accept a bigger salary gap than most trade suitors and could financially help the Lakers cut salaries.
Kenneth Teepe said, “As a team looking to enter the Westbrook sweepstakes, San Antonio makes a lot of sense with a ton of cap space available.” I would like to get some of the draft capital of
Doug McDermott and Josh Richardson are among the veteran players the Spurs could trade. Both players could play important complementary roles alongside Anthony Davis and LeBron James in 2022-23.
“But the work they can send back to Los Angeles is why they’re number three on this list,” Teep wrote. “Doug McDermott and Josh Richardson are rumored to be heading to the Lakers. He’s a good player and he’s perfect for both.”
The Spurs can provide some useful talent, but the Lakers have their sights set on a more dynamic player. The Pacers, along with sniper Buddy Hield, can provide elite his rim protecting Myles Turner’s stretch five.
The Jazz can provide highly efficient attacking players who are used to playing complementary roles like Bojan Bogdanovic and Mike Conley. Utah has become a cooperative trading partner with the Lakers by sending Patrick Beverly.
One way the Spurs could significantly improve their appeal as a Lakers trade partner is by acquiring Jakob Poeltl. Los Angeles gets three veteran talents who can quickly complement James and Davis.
“If San Antonio makes Jakob Poeltl available in the trade, they’ll jump up this list,” Teape wrote. “It will be three starting caliber players, something no other team is rumored to offer.”
A factor to consider is how willing potential trading partners are to take on Westbrook’s contract and request draft capital to pump out talent. If you’re very ambitious, a lower draft capital asking price could possibly help you close the deal.
