Wizards hold off New Orleans Pelicans for 5th straight win

One of the most promising signs of the season may be that the Wizards new orleans pelicans Bradley Beal and Kyle Kuzma played attacking games while Kristaps Porzingis was sidelined with an ankle injury. Leading the way to Washington: The Under-24 group of Daniel Gafford, Deni Avdija and Corey Kispert – with considerable help from old man Taj Gibson.

It was the Wizards’ fifth straight win against a .500+ team. The pelican is tottering. Since Zion Williamson strained his hamstring, he had lost seven straight and lost 10 in 13 games.

Washington (23-26) moved up to 10th in the East, but is actually in a dead heat at 9th. Indiana Pacers (24-27) and chicago bulls (23-26). Wizards are now los angeles clippers 2nd longest winning streak in the NBA.of Philadelphia 76ers 1st place with 7 draws.

There were some important plays in last night’s game. The first was Jonas Valanciunas being thrown for hitting Gibson on the head with his elbow. It was probably coincidental – Valanciunas was making an offensive move towards the basket and Gibson was under leveraged to resist. it was a call

The other was when, with 4:43 remaining, the referee called Avdia foul on Jose Alvarado’s drive. Head coach Wes Unseld, Jr. disputed the call, and officials overturned the call. With that play, the Pelicans could have cut Washington’s lead to three and threatened to end their comeback from a double-digit deficit.

Instead, the Wizards outscored New Orleans 16–11 the rest of the way to seal the win.

  • The Wizards’ record is 12-6 after their 10-game losing streak. They have the fifth easiest remaining schedule in the league.
  • With Valanciunas ejected and Williamson injured, Gafford stormed inside the Pelicans. He finished with his 21 points, 12 rebounds (5 offensive boards), steals and 5 blocks. His rim His protection was very effective, 6-11 Willie He pushed Hernangomez into an airball from He 3 feet. seriously.
  • Avidja delivered another strong performance. He scored 15 points on eight field goal attempts and grabbed nine defensive rebounds. His strong defense is Brandon Ingram’s rough performance. The team was +14 with him on the floor.
  • Kispert didn’t do much, but he went 4-6 from the three-point range. This kind of accuracy forces defenses to take him into account, even if he doesn’t take a ton of long-range attacks.
  • Gibson picked up where Gafford left off — nine points, 10 rebounds (five offensive), three assists and one block. And he used his head to kick Valanciunas out of the game.
  • Kyle Kuzma had a poor offensive game, but had some stifling defense against Ingram.
  • Bradley Beal had three bad games in a row. Last night: Just 5-17 off the floor, 4-rebounds, 5 assists, 5 turnovers. He had some fourth quarter scoring to help close out the win, but his overall performance was poor.
  • Jordan Goodwin seemed like a Wizards development success story. An undrafted free his agent appeared to earn a spot in the rotation with solid play while the veteran was sidelined with injury. Now he’s behind his recently acquired Kendrick Nunn. It could turn out to be the right decision, but it feels strange to see one of the team’s obvious success stories pushed behind a player who doesn’t seem any better.
  • In his second game back from injury, Ingram posted a staggering 45.0% utilization and an offensive rating of just 76. His inefficiency cost the Pelicans about 10 points, according to my +PTS stats comparing player points earned to league average points. Generated when given the same number of possessions.
  • According to +PTS, the Wizards’ aggressive offensive producers include Gafford +4.5, Kispert +3.8, Avdija +2.2 and Gibson +1.7. Beal -6.8, Kuzma -3.7, Nunn -2.8 and Wright -1.7 had below average efficiencies.
  • I think I had 15 zero point possessions of beer last night. It’s a) bad and b) sounds exactly like it – a possession he used that didn’t allow his team to score points. Ingram said he was 17. Kuzma never had a player above 9 on either team.
  • Wizards beat Pelicans Got more aggressive rebounds (13-8). They also won the free throw battle 22-17. This was enough to offset a sales difference of -6.

The four elements that determine the outcome of basketball are shooting (efg), rebounding (offensive rebounding), ball handling (turnover), and fouling (free throw).

I’ve simplified them a bit. Factors are usually expressed as percentages, but raw numbers are often more useful when analyzing a single game.

Below are some performance metrics, including the Player Production Average (PPA) Game Score (very similar to what I used to call the Scoreboard Impact Rating). PPA is my overall production metric, acknowledging players for what helped my team win (scores, rebounds, playmaking, defense) and hurting players (missed shots, turnovers, bad defense, fouls). ) is evaluated.

Game Score (GmSC) Convert individual production into scoreboard points. The scale is the same as points, each player’s Total donation for the game. The lowest possible GmSC is zero.

PPAs A per-possession metric designed for large data sets. A small sample size can lead to strange numbers. But some readers like it, so I’ve included the PPA score as well. Reminder: In PPA, 100 is average, higher is better, replacement level is 45. For a single game, replacement levels are not very useful. I repeat the caution about small samples producing strange results.

Pos is the number of possessions each player had on the floor in this game.

PTS = score

ORTG = Attack Rating, which is points x 100 generated for each individual possession. His league average last season was 112.0. Generated points are not the same as earned points. This includes his assists and offensive rebound values, as well as the share of credits when he receives an assist.

USG = Aggressive usage. Average is 20%.

ORTG and USG are versions of the stats created by Wizards assistant coach Dean Oliver and slightly modified by me. ORTG is an efficiency measure that accounts for the value of shooting, offensive rebounds, assists and turnovers. USG includes shots from the floor and free throw line, offensive rebounds, assists and turnovers.
