100-win and 100-loss teams are piling up as disparity between MLB teams grows

You may recall that when negotiations took place between players and owners about ending the lockout in March, one of the players’ biggest concerns was the number of teams participating in extreme tanking. not. So you basically want to punt before the season starts, stripping your salary to the bone for a few reasons while losing as many games as possible to get a better draft pick.

As simple logic and mathematics dictate, extreme losses clearly give way to extreme victories.

This trend is more evident than anywhere else in the game. In the past, it was rare for a team to go 100-100 in a single season. Even as recently as 2016, cubs 103 wins, twins I lost 103 and that was it. In 2015, cardinals No team won exactly 100 and lost 100. In 2014, no team recorded triple figures.

This three-year period was the last gasp before the influx of 100 winners and 100 losers.

A year with a 100-win team

2022: 4 (Astros, Dodgers, Mets, Braves)
2021: 3
2019: 4
2018: 3
2017: 3
2003: 3
2002: 3
1998: 3
1977: 3
1942: 3

Note that 2022 was just one win away from the Yankees setting the record. It’s still tied to other seasons, and that season happened very recently.

It’s actually even more extreme than this.

Only three teams have won more games than they did this year. dodgers at 111: The 2001 Mariners and 1906 Cubs won 116 each, and the 1998 Cubs Yankees 114 wins.

Prior to 2019, it had only one season with multiple 106+ win teams (the 1998 Yankees and a 106+ win team). braves). Then in 2019 the Dodgers won his 106th, Astros Got 107. And last year giants 107 wins and the Dodgers won 106. Of the 24 teams he has won 105 or more wins to date, 6 (1/4, or 25%) have occurred in his full season in the last five years.

Years of 100-loss teams

2022: 4 (Athletics, Nationals, Reds, Pirates)
2021: 4
2019: 4
2018: 3
2002: 4
1985: 3
1965: 3
1964: 3
1962: 3
1961: 3
1954: 3
1912: 3
1908: 3

Only 24 seasons have been recorded in which the team has lost at least 110 games, four of which have been full seasons in the last four years. Last year he had two, but luckily the worst team this year had “only” 107 losses. Of course, of all the seasons we’ve seen so far, only 36 teams have lost more games in one season than he did in 2022. Washington Nationals.

Hopefully, changes to collective bargaining agreements will take only a few years to have the intended effect and take hold. Extreme wins are actually pretty fun, but it comes at the cost of extreme losses, and seeing 3-4 teams lose more than (sometimes more) 100 of his games each year is a no-brainer for the game. It’s bad.
