Each year, a group of US and Canadian sports writers and broadcasters cast ballots to determine the winner. Voters rank the top three, with 5 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, and 1 point for 3rd. The player with the highest total accumulated points wins the award.

What You Need to Know Before Betting on the NBA Rookie of the Year
But before looking for potential markets, look at the winners dating back to 1966 (the first and latest NBA draft after the regional picks were abolished) and some important things to help with the selection process. I found a trend.
- The guard has won this award 25 times, the forward 23 times, and the center 11 times.
- The award-winning player belonged to a team that missed 59 playoffs or play-in round 46.
- Five of the last six winners belonged to a team that reached either the play-in tournament or the playoffs.
- A total of 18 winners were selected first, 13 were selected next, 7 were selected third, and 6 were selected in the fourth pick.
- Eight winners were selected on the 4th or 5th pick.
- Two winners were selected in 11th place overall.
- One winner was chosen on the 7th, 8th, 9th, 18th and 36th picks.
ROY awards are given to the best first-year players, but the recent trend of these award-winners to challenge the playoff spots may not be just a coincidence.

2017 may have been a turning point after Bucksguard’s Malcolm Brogdon averaged 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals.
Philadelphia’s Dario Salic (12.2) and Buddy Hield (10.6), who played for both Pelicans and Kings that year, scored more points than Brogdon on average.
However, only Brogdon reached the postseason.
Since this award is subjective, I think there has been a clear change in how voters determine their rankings. As a result, it may be wise for bettors to give more consideration to players on teams who are more likely to compete for the playoffs.

Finally, when deciding on ROY candidates, there are no better signs of a player’s ability than their availability. This means that candidates need not only need to be relatively healthy, but also need to be able to play consistently to get a chance to win an award.
Since 1966, the NBAROY winner has averaged about 2697 minutes in the first year. Therefore, bettors should target players who are more likely to face fewer barriers based on where they fit in the rotation or depth chart.
