Breakdown of NCAA baseball tournaments

Before getting into brackets, scores, etc., you need to know that the structure of the NCAA baseball tournament is a bit different from the more familiar hoop variations. Before that, there are some points:

  • This year’s field will include 31 automated bids and 33 large participants through the conference championship. The first round of play is called regional and is a double elimination format. Each of the 16 No. 1 seeds will host the region of each of the four teams, if possible. 1 to 4 are seeded in each of the 16 regions. In each region, No. 1 faces No. 4 and No. 2 faces No. 3 on the first day of action. The winners of these two games then play each other, and the losers play the elimination game.
  • The winner of each regional will advance to Super Regional. Super Regional, which includes a total of 16 teams, is the best 3 series format.
  • The Super Regional winners (8 teams in total) will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • The College World Series is a double elimination format until the last two teams leave. At that point, the slate has been wiped clean and is the best of the three series to determine the national champion.
