2023 NFL Draft: TCU QB Max Duggan declares, but Heisman finalist will play for Horned Frogs through CFP run

TCU 2022 Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Max Duggan has declared himself in the NFL Draft on Sunday. Lead Frogs MichiganDuggan will play with the team throughout its postseason run.

“Being a student-athlete at TCU has been the best experience of my life.It has helped me grow as a footballer, get my degree and become a better person,” Duggan wrote in a statement. “My experience at TCU, and my experience at Amon G. Carter Stadium, is filled with great memories, passion and pride.I have learned many lessons through the ups and downs. We have built relationships.

“With gratitude, I declare the 2023 NFL Draft,” he continued. “But first, we still have work to do.”

Duggan is still eligible if he wants to return, but his declaration of the draft couldn’t have come at a better time. Duggan, who was Chandler Morris’ starting backup in Week 1, came off the bench due to Morris’ injury and never looked back. He accounted for 36 touchdowns and over 3,700 total yards of offense. Those numbers ranked him among the top 25 signal callers nationally, but it was his Duggan playmaking ability that set him apart.

Duggan was usually the one to do it if TCU needed a play, and on several occasions during his unlikely run to CFP. An impressive personal effort, no doubt, Kansas at the Big 12 championship game. Duggan rushed for 110 yards and took the overtime loss with 15 touchdowns, although he clearly played through injury and fatigue.

TCU failed to win the Big 12, but made it to the playoff field, where Duggan was recognized as one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy, finishing second. USC QB Caleb Williams. Despite its ups and downs, it was ultimately a nice touch to end a successful career.

It’s hard to imagine a better time for Duggan to leave. There are some big names at the top of the quarterbacks in this draft-eligible class. of Alabama with Bryce Young Ohio CJ Stroud. Duggan isn’t going to be a Day 1 pick, but he’s a good athlete who can play and elevate his teammates. Someone will like him enough to draft him.
