A look at Indiana’s history against UCLA and USC – The Daily Hoosier

The good news is for those who wanted to see Indiana play in the Rose Bowl again in her lifetime.

It may not go down as planned, but Indiana may play at the stadium in Pasadena, California in the not too distant future.

Well, it may not be the Rose Bowl, but with the addition of UCLA and USC to the Big Ten, at some point the Hoosiers will be sent to the Rose Bowl Stadium to confront the Bruins.

Whenever IU football faces UCLA, it’s the first time the program has met.

Hoosiers have seen the USC four times, including the only appearance of the program at the Rose Bowl game or stadium on January 1, 1968, a 14-3 defeat to a Trojan horse. USC Tailback OJ Simpson recorded two touchdowns and was selected as a player in the game.

IU is always 0-4 against USC for grid irons. They also lost the game in 1953, 1981 and 1982.

Until last year’s match against Cincinnati, the 1981 USC was the highest-ranked non-conference opponent Hoosiers had at the Memorial Stadium. The Trojan was second when it arrived in Bloomington, shutting out Lee Corso’s team 21-0.

Hardwood breaks the series ties the next time Indiana faces USC and UCLA.

Hoosiers are always 2-2 against Trojan horses. The program hasn’t met since the 1974 College Commissioners Association Tournament Championship Game, where IU routed USC 85-60. The other three conferences were all held in Los Angeles.

The Indiana basketball series with UCLA is tied 6-6. They first met in Los Angeles in 1937, when Everett Dean was the head coach. The team hasn’t met since the 2007 NCAA tournament, when Bruins won 54-49 in the steering of Kelvin Sampson’s first season.

Five of the last seven meetings between IU and UCLA were held in March.

Hoosiers defeated UCLA in 1992 to advance to the Final Four, revenge a 15-point defeat early in the season and win 27. IU defeated Bruins in 1976, competed in national championships and continued their undefeated season. In the process, end the UCLA dynasty.

UCLA and Reggie Miller defeated IU in the 1985 NIT Championship Game and defeated IU in the second season of the Bob Knight program in the 1973 National Semifinals. Hoosiers cut the 22-point UCLA lead to 57-55, leaving less than six minutes left in the 1973 Final Four Contest. However, the controversial fifth foul called by Steve Downing of the Indiana Center changed the game.

Indiana hasn’t played UCLA in Los Angeles since 1960, and Bruins hasn’t played in Bloomington since 1956.
