A look at where ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi puts IU and the Big Ten in the 2023 NCAA Tournament – The Daily Hoosier

Well, we lied.

Following the decision of Trace Jackson Davis, Bracket Studies once again reiterates the premature way of hype about college basketball just because it adds an interesting angle to the various 2022-23 college basketball prophecies we’ve seen so far. I will take a look. I’m back and the NBA Draft withdrawal deadline has passed.

After all, the NCAA tournament is everything.

Unless you’re hiding under a rock, you now know virtually all national outlets I see Indiana as my favorite At the Big Ten Conference next season.

But what does that mean in terms of bracket science?

It’s been a long time since Archie Miller criticized the famous ESPN bracket scholar Joe Lunardi for comparing it to Sesame Street character Oscar the Gruch at one point.

It was March 2020, a few days before the world changed forever.

Since then, the situation in IU basketball has changed significantly. Miller is now the head coach of Rhode Island, and new Indiana coach Mike Woodson has the same bright outlook in Bloomington as it was at least six years ago.

At this point, seven years ago, Indiana was preparing for the 2015-16 season and won the latest Big Ten titles. Lunardi’s premature bracket science is a bit like the actual 2016 NCAA tournament bracket. At that time, IU, the Big Ten Champion, was only in 5th place. It came as part of a relatively depressed year in the league. That year, seven big ten teams created the NCAA field, and only Michigan made better money than the fifth-placed seed.

In 2023 Lunardi is thinking of eight big ten teams Participate in a tournament led by the 4th seed automatic qualifying Indiana. The auto qualifying tag assumes that Hoosiers will win their first big tent tournament. Therefore, this is the latest national forecast to position IU as a favorite of the league and is another sign that the conference may not have top 10 level teams.

Lunardi will start in Albany, New York, and slot southern Indiana. This is a popular area for IU with 16 rounds of Sweet and 8 rounds of Elite in Louisville, Kentucky. The final locations in other regions are Kansas City, NY and Las Vegas.

The other seven Big Ten Team Lunardi projects participating in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and their seeds are:

  • Michigan (6)
  • Illinois (6)
  • Michigan (7)
  • Padew (7)
  • Ohio (9)
  • Iowa (10)
  • Rutgers (11) – The first four

From a Big Ten point of view, the most notable absence from the field of Lunardi is Wisconsin. Badgers have participated in 21 of the last 22 NCAA tournaments. Lunardi lists them as part of the “Four Outs”.

Lunardi’s first seeds are Gonzaga, Kentucky, Houston and North Carolina.

The 2023 Final Four is in Houston.
