Phillips is a member of the NCAA Division I Transformation Committee, so he has a tangible influence on potential expansions.
“Now is the time to look at the overall structure of the NCAA and one of its responsibilities was the championship, so I am in favor of looking at it. We are doing it,” said Phillips. He said.

NCAA basketball tournaments continue to be very popular, Phillips even called them the “Crown Jewels.” He wants to keep some elements of the tournament intact, such as automatic qualification.
As far as changes go, Phillips wants a bigger field for big bunks.

Phillips argued that expanding the general field of college basketball tournaments could increase program opportunities across the board.

“Those AQ [automatic qualifiers] Phillips added, “This is just part of the wide range of opportunities we have in Division I sports, with low-resource and high-resource meetings all accessible.
In their current form, both the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments consist of 68 teams. The 32 conference champions automatically qualify.
Commissioners and organizers are currently college football playoffs We are working on expanding the soccer field.
In September, the College Football Board of Managers decided to expand the playoffs to 12 teams from 2026.
