From 2013 to 2018, the Duke football program was consistent. Not great, but consistent. Meanwhile, Blue Devils was 46-32, and 10 wins in the 2013 season was the only event in school history.
Since 2018, Duke has continued his downward spiral, with 0-8 playing at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this past season.
Duke is only 10-25 in the last three seasons combined. It is undeniable that Blue Devils is being rebuilt. Now that we have a head coach and new assistant staff, it’s time to get to work.

Head coach Mike Elko
Elco Coach has taken on the role of his first head coach. He is a career defensive assistant with eight seasons of Power 5 Defensive Coordinator experience at Wake Forest (2014-2016), Notre Dame (2017) and Texas A & M (2018-2021).
Elco used defenses in the past with nickel, which is partly safe and partbacker, and he tends to do that as Duke moves forward. To fully adapt to the five defensive backlooks he wants to do with Duke, Elco needs to add much faster speed to the roster by hiring. Lack of speed is a problem not only in Duke’s defense, but also in the offensive side of football.
Future recruitment is essential to Duke’s long-term success, but Elco has inherited the 2022 roster, which is close to a complete rebuild as seen at the FBS level, let alone Power 5. There are several studs on the roster. Especially at the front 7, but overall there are too many holes in the roster.
It’s the first year for his staff at Elco and Durham. This is not an easy process, but you will have to survive this first year by installing the system and getting the most out of the players on your current roster.

Finding more speeds to complement Calhorn is a concern for Blue Devils. Calhorn will see more and more double teams, especially during the important third down, if no other receivers appear, preferably if there are receivers with speed to go deeper.
Top defensive players and stats
Duke’s defense is dominated by a 6-foot, 3-inch, 300-pound defensive harness. Dewayne Carter.. To improve Duke’s defenses, seeing the pressure from Shaka Heyward (# 42) and RJ Oben (# 94) should be a consistent theme for 2022.

More importantly, having plans for Elco and his staff will help Hayward and the other seven front desk defenders of Blue Devils. There are various electric shocks to help them confuse the opposition.
I’m worried about seeing zero starters coming back to the secondary as I’m having a hard time getting the 2021 secondary to rank 121st in the nation as I give up the pass spray of 10 yards or more in the first place.
The secondary will need that pressure from Carter, Oven and Hayward, no doubt. Pass Rush simply has to go home, based solely on his inexperience. Duke is about to end the season, which allowed 48.6% of the opposition’s third down to be totally transformed, and the secondary was certainly a matter of stats.
In 2022, Elco and his staff will need to find at least one player in the secondary as a stopper. Otherwise, it could be another long season for Duke’s defensive efforts, with the next Murderers’ Row in the slate.
October 1st Virginia (Brennan Armstrong -4,439 yards, 31 touchdowns, 10 intercepts); October 22, Miami (Tyler van Dyck -2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, 6 intercepts); November 4, Boston University (Phil Yurkobeck -Although many were injured last season, there were still 915 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 intercepts. Plus November 26th Wake Forest (Sam Hartman -4,228 yards, 39 touchdowns, 14 intercepts).
