ACC Student-Athletes Excel Once Again in NCAA APR Report

Greensboro, NC (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference team is among the teams of Division I’s universities that meet the criteria and are academically superior, as evidenced by NCAA’s annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) team data on Tuesday. It continues to stand out.

Each Division I institution is responsible for the academic progress of student athletes through APR, a team-based indicator that explains the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student athlete for each semester.

“Our student athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Today’s APR report, published by the NCAA, is another example of their impressive endeavor,” said ACC Commissioner Dr. Jim Phillips. “We are very proud of our program because it consistently exceeds the standards of excellence overall.”

The highlights of the current ACC are:

  • All soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball programs exceeded the NCAA’s required APR.
  • Highest APR of the 5 Power Conferences in Men’s Sports: Soccer, Basketball, Crossover, Swimming and Diving (Thailand), Track and Field, Wrestling.
  • The highest APR of Power5 conferences in golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field women’s sports.
  • Men’s basketball:

    • The 11 teams’ APR is above Division I’s average of 966 (most in the Power 5 conference).
    • The ACC team’s average APR is 983, which is 15 points higher than the NCAA average.

  • football:

    • The APR of the 11 ACC teams exceeds the Division I average of 969 (second in peer meetings).
    • The average APR of 983 is 14 points above the NCAAFBS average.

  • Women’s basketball:

    • The APR of the 10 teams exceeds the Division I average of 983 (tied at most peer meetings).
    • The 983 APR matches the NCAA average.

  • baseball

    • Ten of the 14 ACC teams have an average APR of over 977 (mostly in peer meetings).
    • Baseball: The 984 APR is 7 points above the NCAA average.

Despite having to deal with many of the challenges of recent years, Division I student athletes continue to perform well in the classroom. The national academic progress rate for four years is 984, an increase of 1 point from the last rate announced in May 2020. Men’s basketball improved by 2 points to 968, but baseball (977), soccer (964) and women’s basketball (983) remained. It is stable on average for 4 years. The APR announcement is back after a one-year hiatus. This spring, the Division I Board of Directors approved a continuous suspension of APR penalties for another year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it did support the publication of APR data.

The Division I Committee on Academics has developed and implemented policies and initiatives to improve academic support services on campus. In addition, the National Office is actively working with schools to strengthen their academic programs so that student athletes can earn a degree.
