Analyzing college football’s new landscape

For years, college football was equally lacking.

The same team is selected for a four-team college football playoff. The system has played for 13 different programs in his eight years, and he has only five teams reached the title game in the last seven years.

Twice in the last five seasons, the finals have been decided by SEC rivals Georgia and Alabama. He hasn’t played in the Pac-12 since 2017 and has been out of the Big 12 for the past two years. And things just got worse with the SEC adding two of the Big 12’s top programs (Oklahoma and Texas) and the Big Ten poaching USC and UCLA from the Pac-12. 2024 respectively.

it’s power 2“And everyone else,” Mike Alesko, the commissioner of the American Athletic Conference, told The Post.

Aresco called USC and UCLA’s departure for the Big Ten “a pretty big earthquake.” Aftershocks may never end. Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren envisions the league becoming 20 teams at some point in the future. There have been reports that Oregon is interested in participating in a strong conference. It leaves major brands such as the independent Notre Dame Cathedral outside the Superleague, along with Florida State University, Miami, and ACC’s shrinking Clemson, creating a clear line between the haves and have-nots. only.

“Despite all the money being poured into college football, as evidenced by the new deal with the Big Ten, I still feel like the sport is headed for the iceberg at some point.” college football analyst, historian, and radio operator Paul Feinbaum. An ESPN show host told the Post in a telephone interview. “What’s happening right now is not sustainable. You could argue that there are essentially two superconferences in the structure and the rest of the sport is important. But I don’t think that’s really the case. I do not think.

“We have the Big Ten and the SEC and no one else in that ecosystem.”

Big Ten’s recent blockbuster TV deals with FOX, CBS and NBC will pay up to $1.2 billion annually through 2030 and air games in three different time slots on Saturdays. The SEC is currently collecting $300 million from ESPN for him, but that figure could go up if Oklahoma and Texas join.

With the two conferences clearly outperforming the rest of the country (in terms of on-field performance and revenue), college football risks further hurting its already imbalanced product. Participation in sports is coping with decline and has been declining for seven years. According to the NCAA, the sport’s 130 team average fan count is 39,848 per game, the lowest since 1981. Part of this may be due to his COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s a worrying trend.

“This is probably the most important time in decades,” Alesko said. “Such an integration [with two power leagues] The rest of the country risks becoming irrelevant. It’s something you can’t have. Eventually, interest will decline. ”

One possible solution could be an expansion of the playoff system that has been discussed for years. The current system will last until 2025. In June 2021, the Playoffs working group recommended an expansion to 12 teams, including his six highest-ranked conference champions and his six general teams as determined by selection committee rankings.

However, the playoff’s steering committee, consisting of 10 FBS Commissioners and Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick, was unable to reach unanimous agreement and the plan was never submitted. The July meeting saw renewed optimism about expansion agreements, perhaps spurred by the recent addition of Big Ten. However, it is unclear whether new formats can be implemented soon if agreement can be reached in the near future.

Feinbaum said, “We see plays every day in the media, so I don’t think we can wait until 2026 for college football to expand its playoffs. “It’s a shrinking sport. Watch the ACC now. It was considered one of the top soccer conferences not so long ago, and now they are at a huge disadvantage.”

Auto modifiers can be a problem. The Big Ten and SEC clearly don’t need them. We certainly want them.

“This is why Mike Aresko is banging the table,” said Rick Neuheisel, former Washington and UCLA coach and SiriusXM college football analyst. I can not do it [conference champions] It will be judged against the 4th and 5th place teams in the Super Two Conference. Just like basketball tournaments, we need some automatic qualifiers. ”

It’s clearly an important moment in sports. A Super League is being created and more moves may be in the works. Further confusion is caused by transfer portals and a new rule that allows a player to transfer schools once without missing him for a year. All the money and top players could go to two leagues that own almost all the top brands.

“It’s all driven by TV, it’s all driven by ESPN and FOX, essentially that’s the front line,” Finebaum said. “This is no longer about college sports. It’s such a strange place, I’ve been covering college football for 40 years and I’ve never seen anything like it.”
