At the Buzzer: Indiana 77, North Carolina 65 – Inside the Hall

Thoughts on the 77-65 victory over North Carolina:

How did this happen

The first half was Indiana’s defensive clinic on the Branch McCracken Court. The Hoosiers overwhelmed North Carolina, and he held the Tar Heels to his 29 points on 8-for-28 shooting. But despite a great defensive effort, Indiana couldn’t stay away from finishing as a national runner-up last season.

The Hoosiers committed 11 of those and sent North Carolina to the free-throw line 14 times, largely because of fouls. The Tar Heels saw him lead 22-21 at the 7:41 mark, and a 13-2 run saw the Hoosiers lead him 34-24. Indiana, who scored 1.12 points per possession in the first half, led 35-29 at the break. Jalen Hood-Schifino was a big factor offensively in the opening 20 minutes as he scored 12 points in 19 minutes. Trace Jackson-Davis wasn’t far behind with 10 points and 7 rebounds in 15 minutes.

The Hoosiers started the second half strong, pushing their lead to 15 at 46–31 with layups from Jackson and Davis with 15:59 to play. By the under-12 media timeout, Indiana had a 52-41 lead. After North Carolina came within nine of him after a timeout, Indiana scored his next five points and pushed the lead back to 14 where he was 57-43. The Tar Heels had him within 7 with 6:39, but Indiana answered again. Trey Galloway, who had been plagued all night on defense, made a huge steal and layup in just over six minutes of play to give the Hoosiers a 61-52 lead, with Caleb Love of the final media timeouts. His 3-pointer put Carolina within eight of him, 65-57. The Tar Heels were nowhere near the rest of the way as IU improved to 7-0.
