Despite the success of the baseball team and the arrival of enthusiastic football coach Jim Mora, UConn is still a very basketball school. And now that almost all UConn men’s basketball teams have arrived on campus for a summer session, we decided to disassemble Husky’s current roster.
Yes, another player or two may join by the end of the summer. However, the core of the team has been set and will be added in the future via either the transfer portal, international players, 2022, or reclassified 2023 new hires, making it a major contributor to next season. It’s unlikely.
Let’s see what you can expect from a husky from 2022 to 23 (by number).
2 — Tristen Newton: UConn is in desperate need of a point guard, especially a large point guard that can be scored, and Husky has won a point guard in Newton. This is widely regarded as one of the top transfer portal acquisitions this spring. The 6-foot-5 rising senior scored an average of 17.7 points per game in last season’s ECU. Also, UConn fans may continue to ridicule at the American Athletic Conference, but Newton has won the honor of Second Team All AAC. He is a wonderful kid, an excellent student from the military family, and his former ECU coach, Joe Doury, said: “He is wired to score.” In fact, he burned UConn with 25 points three seasons ago. Newton is a 31.6% career 3-point shooter who shot 33.3% from last season’s distance. That may seem like a problem, as Harley is trying to adopt a four-seater attack. However, Newton’s shots were hampered last season as the ECU suffered some serious injuries and the team was able to really key him. Using Husky, Newton believes: I feel like shooting will go up.. “
4 — Nahiem Alleyne: Another portal pickup, Alleyne, helps meet the needs of long range shooting threats. Rising 6-4 Seniors are 38.7 percent career shooters across the arc after spending three seasons at Virginia Tech, shooting 3 to 37.3 percent last season. He shot 3-40.8 percent as a sophomore. He is also a dynamic athlete and perfectly fits the bill of what Harley was looking for in the transfer portal. That is, shooting, scoring, and (potentially) a guard that can be started immediately.
5 — Hassan Diara: After Harley robs the portal of Newton and Alain, the next realistic target is enough to play important minutes, but at least this season is willing to serve as more backup. I was a security guard. The 6-2 guard Diara was the perfect choice. The rising juniors have averaged 6.1 points per game over the last two seasons at Texas A & M, mostly off the bench. He did show the clutch gene and hit three three pointers that won the tie or game in the last 10 seconds of Aggie’s last season. “I work hard every day,” Diara said. Told Hurst Connecticut Media, “And it appeared at its greatest moment.” Hassan, the younger brother of Mahamadou Diarra, a former husky who was injured and lost his playing career and a student / graduate assistant for the past four years, made his name at UConn. I’m trying to get rid of it. He will probably start as a backup for Newton this season.
11 — Alex Caravan: According to Harley, a “positionless” player who was able to greatly help Husky as a freshman in a red shirt, thanks to one important attribute of “his shooting”. Harley promised to be “at another level.” 6-8 Caravan did not play, but spent two semesters with the team as an early registrant. It doesn’t have to be a candidate for the Big East Defensive Player of the Year, but if he shoots the way he expected, it should help him with a defensive end on the floor, which is simply a solid defender. Harley hopes Caravan will develop a little mid-post game this summer as the team will switch on with him a lot on the ball screen because of his shooting ability.
13 — Ritchie Springs: What can you say? During the three seasons at Stords, the kid barely played 41 minutes, the equivalent of a game. Yes, one season he was seated as an academic red shirt, but the 6-9 forward has not yet played important college minutes. Can it change this season? The departures of Isaia Wheely and Acock Acock certainly open up the available minutes, and as Harley points out, Springs is still “only” 20 years old. Still, with Sanogo’s return, the addition of Klingan and Caravan, and the potential emergence of Johnson, it’s hard to see him playing a lot.
21 — Adama Sanogo: When Marquette’s Justin Lewis chose to keep his name in the 2022 NBA Draft, Sanogo soon became the front runner of the Big East Player of the Year in 2023. Anyway, he may have already been. Sanogo, one of the five finalists of the Jabber Awards at the top centers nationwide, will be among them. However, two finalists, Gonzaga’s Drutimme and Kentucky winner Oscarsibwe, will also return. Sure, Sanogo can improve a bit by getting out of the low post, and perhaps step out to hit 15 feet to help his NBA stock. But quiet and unobtrusive (he didn’t even want financial help for the damage done to his parents’ home in Africa), the 6-9 Center is the most husky can bet next season. It’s a sure thing. He is a stud.
24 — Jordan Hawkins: Much is expected from the rising 6-5 sophomores this season. Hurley & Co. Seems to be using Hawkins, but Ray Allen (Or James Bouknight), As a double-digit scorer and a major three-point threat. The NBA Draft seems to take advantage of the same thing (NBADraft.net calls him 20th pick overall in 2023). Hawkins showed a flash last season, shooting 3 to 33.3 percent. At other times he looked like a freshman. His form of shooting is true and his athletic ability is excellent. This is a huge leap from 5.8 points per game to, for example, 14 points. If Hawkins can do that, UConn will be a business.

Jessica Hill / Associated Press32 — Donobank Ringan: He has finally arrived! 7-3 Bristol Central products seem to have been used in the program for many years now, but Clingan officially moved to campus over the weekend. It will be really interesting to see what Big Feller can offer Husky as a freshman. The jump from the Central Connecticut Conference to the Big East is a big one, but Klingan proves to be competing with the top domestic competition in AAU tournaments. Husky can be used at least 10-12 minutes from the bench from the clingan, primarily as a backup for Sanogo. He is a seasoned passerby with excellent footwork and a repertoire of low post moves. He dropped 15 pounds of “baby fat” in the first few weeks after the high school season, and he can take a step back and knock down three points. His endurance has been tested and he needs to improve defensively — such as switching off the screen. And he knows it.. As Harley told him, Work on defense. “
35 — Samson Johnson: Now I know his “potential of the wall”. We couldn’t see last season as a freshman, as the experienced forward backlog gave Johnson only a small amount of meaning. Therefore, 6-10 “Terror Dactyl” remains on campus from the end of school, working on his power and shooting. If Johnson can show a long distance, he can fight Caravan for a few minutes at 4 o’clock. Either way, he’s ready to see more play time this season. “this is Well documented what I think of his talentHarley recently told Hurst Connecticut Media. “So next year everyone will have the opportunity to meet him.”

Paul Connors / AP44 — Andre Jackson: Along with Hawkins, Jackson is a double-digit scorer who busts out and is the most needed UConn player to be a true star.He seems to already have Accepted the role of team leader. In Harley’s new attack set, Jackson needs to improve his 3-point fire. Even if 36.1% of him actually ranked third in Husky last winter. He can do everything else: clever passage, long and angry defenses, and some of the weirdest movements ever seen in Stose. A big third grader from Jackson should not only make UConn very good, but also push him into the conversation in the 2023 NBA Draft.
