Candid Coaches: Who will be the best player in men’s college basketball in 2022-23?

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander surveyed nearly 100 coaches for the annual Candid Coaches series. They surveyed everyone from the head of the elite program his coach to an assistant at a small Division 1 school. In exchange for complete anonymity, these coaches offered unfiltered honesty on many topics.Over the course of three weeks, we’re featuring summer survey results on the state of college basketball.

The 2022-23 season is poised to feature more big men prominently than in any college basketball year to date. Of course, this is a byproduct of the NBA no longer valuing traditional centers and power forwards the way it did in 60 years. With an eclectic lineup, the famous 4s and 5s return to college hardwoods.

2 rare CBS Sports First Team All Americans It’s something that hasn’t happened in a very long time. It also means that this year’s player’s national race should not only be engaging, but also help with the Q rating between college hoop popularity and casual. Possible names are wearing the uniforms of power brand programs and high-ranking teams, as well as next season.

Here’s what Coach believes to be the best: We asked our annual question, which is (for now) three races:

  • “Tim has won more games than any player in his class. He’s the best post player I’ve seen in college basketball in years and a total winner. Tough and can.Score, his IQ is trustworthy. He has no weaknesses other than analytical.Yeah yeah he’s been exposed a little bit against Baylor. He’s got a great stash too.Freddy It’s Mercury.”
  • “We play them twice a year so I get to see him up close and personal. He was a difficult player. He completes all eight feet.If you double him, he can pass out. He’s a complete nightmare. We literally do everything possible against him All defenses had to be tried…and nothing seemed to work.
  • “They[Gonzaga]still play the traditional style of basketball. It’s inside-out and has moving parts. It’s not just three-shots and layups. They’ve got all the stats and all that, KenPoms and all that stuff.” “When you watch them play, you see they play in a traditional style of basketball. “That’s the most exciting thing. He’s probably the best player in the country to play that way.”

  • “I hate to vote for the British, but that big guy is really good. I don’t know if he’s going to be the top scorer, but I think overall he will be.” “
  • “He’s the returning player of the year. Great Britain played very little for him, but he still averaged 17 and 15. For the same reason, I put Baccott in a close second. Both can dominate the game (and the grass), demanding the ball in almost every possession.”
  • “The fact that he can dominate the game without scoring points makes it impossible for him to prepare.”
  • “I’m going with a big Oscar. I think he’s got a chip on his shoulder with the way last year ended. Another year in Kentucky will make him even more comfortable. His motor and rebound I’m the scariest. Play him as a coach more than anyone else.”

About Bacotte

  • “Baccott’s numbers are off the charts and his old teammates around him will take them to a high level and win.”
  • “He finished the season doing his best. You have to imagine he was able to take a path of improvement and growth over the course of the draft. He has the ability not only to direct the defensive game of the
  • “It’s funny that at a time when traditional big men are dying out, many of the best returners in college are more traditional big men. He’s the best of the group. He plays The pressure allows him to completely dominate the game.On the backboard, unlike Tshiebwe, he has the touch and skill around the rim.”

About Jacques

  • “That guy is awesome. What don’t you like about him? … I think he would be loved more if he was on the East Coast. I like people who want to represent that show or that school.”
  • “Jaquez is my most underrated player.”

Takeaway

The margins/results of this poll have taken me by surprise.Tshiebwe was the consensus NPOY last season, not only here at CBS Sports, but all the other big names like Naismith, Oscar Robertson, The Associated Press, Wooden, NABC, etc. It has also won awards at various domestic outlets. He averaged 17.5 points and 15.1 rebounds, becoming the first player in over 40 years to average over 15.0 rebounds and 15.0 points. He led Kentucky to the No. 2 seed…and Kentucky gave St. Peters a historic upset.

In the meantime, and given that Tim has a track record of title contenders and is also a reliable player offensively, I get it. Instead, it’s Gonzaga’s BMOC that wins by a margin.

One coach explained why he chose Timme over Tshiebwe: His supporting role and a better team. ”

It’s one way to show that Timme isn’t around as talented as Tshiebwe at the University of Kentucky. I don’t know if it is. Gonzaga are ranked slightly above Great Britain at the start of the season. Both could make the top five when the two face off in Spokane, WA on November 20th.Also, as I recently pointed out 68 preseason specials you should knowTimme vs. Tshiebwe marks the first time in almost 50 years To face this year’s returning player and a two-time All-American. A special showdown awaits.

Timme will aim for an average of 20 and 10. Tshiebwe could average 18 and 18. Both are big, but very different.

That said, I don’t think this will be a two-man race by midseason.

A strong third center in this debate is the man who led North Carolina to yet another championship game and set a tournament record in the process. Bacot is the first player to record his six double-doubles in the NCAA Tournament. Timme and Tshiebwe received a combined 77.6% of the vote, but some of the coaches I spoke with were enthusiastic, arguing that Bacot would be the most consistent player in the country this season. I was. His followers are few in number, but perhaps more ardent.

Part of it was because the UNC was in the ACC. Some coaches had predicted that the Heels would win the league, which would further help Bako’s case. Caleb Love could also be a top-end player this season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being him.

If you look at who else got the vote, Jackson Davis and Jacques are also big shots. Dickinson too. There are a lot of these types of players in the sport so it will be interesting to see which guard ends up being the best player, Susser, Love and George are the most favored but Abmas Let’s not forget he led the nation in scoring over his 2020-21 oral his Roberts.

Without NIL laws in place, it’s safe to say that at least some of these players won’t come back. Thankfully, yes. Tshiebwe, Timme, Bacot – these players could sign contracts to become millionaires while playing college basketball. It is the most important factor in keeping basketball viable and suitable.
