College football scores, rankings, highlights: Clemson, USC overcome slow starts to remain undefeated

Week 6 was one of those rare Saturdays where a top 10 team didn’t lose, but with the upset hampered by some strong favorites across the country, it hardly came easy for the country’s best teams. Among the teams to emerge victorious after early troubles are No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 USC, all three teams are undefeated ahead of next week’s big conference games. I stayed.

Clemson scored a 3-3 win against struggling Boston College for most of the second quarter before the Tigers scored their first touchdown of the game in the final minute of the first half to win 31-3. I noticed that I was stuck with the draw of the . The Tigers dominated the defense, but even with a 28-point victory it was clear that the offense was on the way. Clemson punts seven times for just 364 total yards. The Tigers move to Florida next week.

Likewise, USC held off Washington State for a 30-14 home victory, largely because of its defense. The Trojans squandered their 10-0 lead in the beginning by allowing back-to-back touchdown drives in the second quarter. From there, they gave in and held Washington State scoreless on his next eight possessions, ending the game. Travis Dye paved the way offensively with 149 rushing yards and a touchdown on his 28 carries. Utes on Saturday, which he lost 42-32 at UCLA, could give USC their toughest test yet.

Outside the top 10, North Carolina State overcame a quarterback Devin Leary loss to beat a spirited Florida State team 19-17. The Wolfpack outscored the Seminoles 16–0 in the second half, with Leary sidelining his arm with a sling.
