“This is the place we wanted and envisioned for our program,” says Staley. “You have to give it to the players. We always get some of the best players in the country. I don’t know if I’m going to come in and say I want to be the number one team in the country, but they say they want to be national champions, and this is a step towards becoming national champions.”
Stanford, Texas, Iowa and Tennessee round out the top five teams preseason voting. that is Iowa’s highest ranking since 1994 When the Hawkeyes were also 4th at midseason.

“October’s standings and March’s standings are irrelevant, but I want the team to feel confident and proud of what they’ve accomplished. Iowa is on the map,” said coach Lisa. Bruder said. “We celebrate it and then forget it.”
South Carolina was the number one team last year in a row and was the top team for 20 consecutive weeks. Since the 1994-95 season, when the top 25 became the writers’ vote, only UConn (4 times) and Baylor (1 time) have had longer winning streaks at No. 1.
