Darius Lee, a 21-Year-Old College Basketball Player, Killed in Harlem Shooting

A college basketball player was killed in a shooting in Harlem early Monday morning, officials said.

New York Police Department detective Brian Magee said at a news conference that police responded to reports of people shot dead around 12:40 am on Monday.

Darius Lee, a 21-year-old star player on the Houston Baptist University men’s basketball team, was sentenced to death after being taken to a local hospital, officials said. Lee was from the Harlem district of Manhattan. According to HBU, he was at home during the summer and was supposed to return to school for summer school next month.

In addition to Lee, six men and two women were shot dead. Police have found five people shot dead on the sidewalk under the Madison Avenue Bridge connecting Harlem and the Bronx, Maggie said. According to the NYPD, four of the victims went to the hospital by private means. According to police, the other eight shooting victims are in stable condition.

Houston Baptist star Dariusley led the team in both scoring and rebounding.

According to the NYPD, police recovered the firearms on the scene, but there were no arrests and an investigation is ongoing.

“We are shocked and can’t bother with this news,” said Houston Baptist head coach Ron Cotlet.
