Did Theo Pinson almost miss his chance to play for the UNC Basketball?!

In the latest episode of his podcast, Run Your Race, former UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson told the crazy story Tar Heel fans want to hear.

In sports (and life itself) there are always “what ifs” that occur in certain situations.

For college sports fans, the topic “What if a particular player went to this particular school?”

In the latest episode of his podcast, Run Your Race, former UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson told a crazy story that will surely shock some Tar Heels fans.

As you may already know, the 2014 graduate recruitment was a very memorable one for North Carolina. Featuring Pinson, Joel Berry and Justin Jackson, the three-player class played a key role in leading the program to back-to-back national championships. The trio won a national title to go down in the UNC basketball history books.

But Pinson was mostly an oddball, so the trio hardly got along. What is this Pinson had to say on this matter.

“I don’t know how you found out, but for some reason, someone told me that D’Angelo Russell was about to move to Carolina. I knew what I was trying to get.

Yes, former Ohio State standout and current NBA player D’Angelo Russell was pretty much committed to the University of North Carolina.

Pinson heard rumors that Russell was one of the top 20 players in the 2014 class and could join the programme. Knowing that Roy Williams and his staff had only one scholarship left for him, the former Tar Heel wasted no time in claiming his place at Chapel Hill. I did.

Now, you might think this story is a bit of an exaggeration. However, Russell confirmed the story and responded with “lol that’s true” under Pinson’s Instagram post of a podcast conversation on the topic. Having said that, there may be more talk about this in the near future.

Russell remained committed to the Buckeyes, where he was the only consensus All-American during his college years.

Pinson continued to grow as a valuable four-year North Carolina player and remains a fan favorite among the Tar Heel nationals today.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Pinson’s decision worked for both parties.
