Former BYU Hoops Star Commits To Texas Longhorns

Salt Lake City – Shaylee Gonzales, a dynamic former Cougars playmaking guard, has announced that she will attend the University of Texas in the fall.

After entering the transfer portal in June, Gonzales announced her decision to Longhorns via social media on Monday, July 11. Texas is head coach Vic Schaefer.

The WCC player of the year twice He has been a BYU star since arriving on campus in 2018. Last season, Gonzales led the nationally ranked BYU team with 18.3 points per game, scoring 5.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.3 steals.

Gonzales has finished his second season with numerous honors, including AP All-American Honorable Mention, Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, All-WCC First Team, and three WCC Players of the Week. Her 18.3 points per game was enough to be third in the WCC, and 4.5 Assist was second in the conference.

She finished her career at BYU in 10th place in history.

Gonzales has joined the Texas team, who finished 3rd in the Big 12 with 29-7. The Longhorns advanced to Elite 8, defeating Uta Utz on the way and falling to defending champion Stanford at 59-50.

She needs to add a scoring punch to the guard line, which includes second grade Lori Harmon and 11.4 points per game. Harmon is a longhorn who scored an average of double digits last season, so the chances of scoring should be plentiful for Gonzales.

Wind of change

After finishing 26-4 and losing the first round of the NCAA tournament in March, the BYU Women’s Basketball Program has undergone many changes.

Step Amber Whiting, who graduated from BYU in 2001 and has recently been the head coach of the high school basketball team in Burley, Idaho. Whiting will take over the BYU program after winning the 2022 4A Idaho State Championship and being selected as the 4A Idaho Stateman Coach of the Year.

In addition to Gonzales and her more than 18 points per game, Whiting aims to replace Paisley Harding’s 17.1 points per game, now with the WNBA’s Seattle Storm.
