The NCAA introduced a forwarding portal on October 15, 2018, providing athletes with a way to explore their options. Players do not need to ask the coaching staff for permission to transfer. It just requires you to enter a name for compliance. It usually takes 24-48 hours for the player to follow the request. The school is free to contact the player without any restrictions once the name appears on the portal.

Players who enter their name in the transfer portal mean that they will consider the option, but not necessarily leave. Players are free to withdraw their name at any time. However, the school is not obliged to keep players on scholarships once they enter the portal.

Last year, the NCAA created a new policy that allows student athletes to work one turn in their careers without having to sit in their place of residence for a year. This means that all players entering the transfer portal for the first time are eligible to enroll in a new school immediately, as long as they meet the NCAA mandated admission deadline.
