Hochman: With SEC, Big Ten growing, what will college football look like in decade? | Benjamin Hochman

Hello from 2032. There are no flying cars yet. And while some of the sport hasn’t changed for 10 years, for example Adam Wainwright is still touting the Cardinals, but if anyone in 2022 sees it now, the college football landscape is certainly recognizable. you can’t.

By the way, that year in 2022 was a turning point in the modern reorganization of college football. That summer, USC and UCLA surprisingly left Pac-12, home of a long-standing conference of these two institutions, to join Big Ten in 2024.

It seemed strange from a schedule standpoint — did UCLA suddenly play the meeting’s opponent, Purdue? Did the USC participate in a conference match against Rutgers? But of course, the only move to Big Ten was money. Schools in Los Angeles made money at this Midwest conference, much like Texas and Oklahoma attended the Southeastern Conference.

And in 2032 we now have two top heavy systems for power conferences, the SEC and the Big Ten.

Each of these two conferences has 20 schools. Each has a $ 1 billion TV deal. Each is enriched with old-fashioned rivals and new rivals packed with punches. And they stir up the ongoing national debate over which meetings are better. And it makes the whole a lot of fun.

The SEC has decided to add and expand Clemson, North Carolina, Georgia Institute of Technology, Miami, and Florida. Big Ten was supported in Washington, Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma State and Louisville.

In a hurry and sloppy, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Pac-12 have created a PACC by joining forces or combining the forces they have left. This is not an acronym, but a wedged initial from “ACC” and “Pac”.

The PACC, which poached and stripped the Marquee School from each conference, embodies everything that has failed since the summer of 2022. And the Atlantic coast.

And the unexpected counter punch came from a new creative meeting that plagued PACC.

The inventor was based on the brain. At the time of 2022, each conference seemed to be more scholarly enthusiastic than other schools, and there were some schools that were more non-income and more enthusiastic about Olympic sports than other schools. Therefore, these schools have created their own conference, the Prestige League.

And even seemingly legitimate meetings were still anxious to make money, so the genius move persuaded Oregon (and its Nike money and influence) to join. The Prestige League also robbed Notre Dame, who remained independent for football. And it picked up two schools that were gently kicked out of the SEC and Big Ten.

The current Prestige League includes the old Pac-12 Oregon, Oregon, Stanford, and Cal. Boston University, Duke, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Virginia, Wake Forest (ACC). Vanderbilt of SEC; northwest of Big Ten. Big 12 Baylor and Texas Christian.

Oh yeah, big 12. Only Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, West Virginia, and Texas Tech remained, so we needed to add Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, and other similar schools just to bring the conference to light. Basketball was great. However, from a soccer point of view, it was basically at the same level as PACC.

Occasionally, some PACC teams made hay in college football, including new additions to the Pit Panthers, Arizona State Sandevilles, or UNLV Runnin’Rebels.

However, the new College Football Playoff system works for these schools and conferences. Ironically, in January 2022, it was ACC and Pac-12 who voted against the 12 teams’ playoffs in six automated bids.

However, the new playoff system, implemented in 2027, has 12 teams per year.

And there are 9 automatic bids. However, the Power Council (and its accompanying broadcast partners) exercised that power. The SEC and Big Ten each have three automatic bids, one for the Prestige League, one for the PACC and one for the Big 12.

The remaining three teams are the three highest ranked teams that have not yet participated in the playoffs.

Overall, the 12-team playoffs are a pleasure — more upset and revenge games from the regular season. And, although generally from the SEC and Big Ten, different schools win everything. For example, the active national champion of 2031 is Chase Daniel’s Missouri Tigers coach.

Indeed, the advantages of SEC and Big Ten are a bit out of date for some people. And yes, as in 3032, there is always debate about the fairness of the college football playoff system. But it’s still college football — rivals, pageants, history, mascots, school colors and traditions. Everyone is making a lot more money these days — except for real college football players, as you know.

Even with name, image and portrait transactions, players cannot profit in the way schools and networks benefit. And the rich have certainly enriched this generation. Beginning with the strategic decisions of Texas and Oklahoma, the 2022 USC and UCLA moves continued.
