Georgia offers 18 different NCAA-sponsored sports that extend far beyond the walls of Sanford Stadium, Stegeman Coliseum, Jack Turner Stadium, and Foley Field. Sports such as tennis, athletics and golf have been incredibly successful in their history.
But how are these sports done these days?
Here’s how all NCAA-sponsored sports in Georgia have worked (or haven’t) both on a SEC and national scale in the last three years.
Women’s cross country
2019
SEC: Finished 8th in the SEC Championship.
NCAA: Two individual runners have advanced to the NCAA Championship, finishing 40th and 45th.
2020
SEC: Finished 8th in the SEC Championship.
NCAA: Georgia runners didn’t advance to the NCAA Championship.
2021
SEC: Finished 12th in the SEC Championship.

Georgia Football has participated in one NCAA tournament in the last decade. New UGA coach Keidane McAlpine will try to bring the bulldog back into the championship battle for the first time since 2014.

Georgia Volleyball has slowed for the past two seasons after a strong year in 2019. This is UGA’s second trip to the 2019 NCAA Tournament since 2013.

Katie Abrahamson-Henderson will replace former head coach Joni Taylor, who currently heads Texas A & M. “Coach Abe” left UCF and led the Knights in the best season of the program. Abrahamson-Henderson aims to help Lady Bulldogs reach the first Sweet 16 game since 2011.
Men’s basketball
2019-2020

This season looked tougher than ever for the Bulldog, whose only SEC victory beat Alabama. Former Florida head coach Mike White was hired this offseason to rectify the ship for a program with one regular-season SEC championship since the conference was founded in 1932. ..

Jack Bowery retired as the longest-serving SEC coach in any sport after 44 seasons of coaching both men and women in Georgia this offseason. The 14 SEC Women’s Coach of the Year has led the women’s team to 7 NCAA Championships and 11 SEC Championships.

The first season to lead Georgia, softball coach Tony Baldwin, started hard, but lost momentum as the tight SEC schedule seemed to be sacrificed. The Bulldogs won four of the first five conference series and then dropped the last three.

Poor performance in SEC tournaments should not undermine the success of the women’s team during the regular season and the NCAA postseason. During his nine years as a women’s team coach, head coach Josh Brewer led 29 tournament wins, including two NCAA regional sweeps.

UGA Men’s Tennis Coach Manuel Diaz is the strongest SEC coach in history with over 700 career wins. Diaz led the Bulldog to 28 his SEC Championships in 34 years and won four NCAA national titles. The latest title is 2008.

The departure of Cyprianau before the 2021 season was a difficult loss for the program, but the recruitment of former USC coach Caryl Smith Gilbert helped relieve the pain. Smith Gilbert aims to continue Georgia’s recent success in the NCAA Championship next season.
