International Update: Four PSWS Alumnae Represent on their National Teams

University Park, Pennsylvania — International competition is in full swing, with four female soccer alumni from Penn State University representing the highest level of programs this summer.

With Alyssa Neihar Sam Coffey A member of the US Women’s National Team playing in the CONCACAF Championship Tournament with Costa Rica Women’s National Team Rocky Rodriguez.

Beyond the Atlantic Ocean, Laura Freigan is playing for the German Women’s National Team at the UEFA Women’s Championship.

The championship is underway, as is the qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

America

With Alyssa Neihar Sam Coffey He is a member of the USWNT in the 2023 World Cup and will face Canada in the CONCACAF Championship Final on July 18th.

In addition to the championships on the line, the winners of the tournament finals will also win spots at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics and advance to the CONCACAF Olympic play-in against the winners of the bronze medal match.

Neihar started with Goal vs Jamaica and scored 48th Clean sheet as USWNT won 5-0 in Mexico on July 7. The match that ended the World Cup berth. The 2009 PSU graduate scored the only shot in Jamaica. Neihar has 48 caps in her name.

Coffey was on the US team in a pre-tournament training camp and a match against Colombia, but did not play in either friendly match. When Ashley Hatch was injured in a match against Jamaica, Coffey was summoned to a roster of 23 players to add depth to the midfield of the United States during the knockout round.

Coffee, a 2021 PSU graduate, was available on the bench during the match between the United States and Costa Rica, but did not appear.

Costa Rica

Rocky Rodriguez and the Costa Rica Women’s National Team, who defeated Panama and Trinidad and Tobago, advanced to the CONCACAF semi-finals and entered the World Cup.

After losing to Canada and the United States, the team became a Group B runner. They will then face Jamaica in the bronze medal match on July 18th. The winner will advance to the CONCACAF Olympic play-in match and will be played at a later date.

Rodriguez has made three starts so far during the tournament. On July 5th vs. Panama, Rodriguez started the game in the 6th minute with a header behind the net. Costa Rica beat Panama 3-0.

The 2015 PSU Alum averages 76 minutes per match during the tournament.

Germany

2017 PSU graduates Laura Freigan and the German Women’s National Team won a perfect 3-0 and did not score a goal on the UEFA Euro 2022 Group Stage. The team will then face Austria in the quarterfinals of the knockout stage.

Freigan played a match on the group stage when the team beat Finland 3-0.
