Jaxson Robinson is BYU basketball’s latest addition. What can the former Arkansas and Texas A&M product bring to Provo?

The number of scholarships available to the BYU Men’s Basketball Team has been reduced to one.

The Cougars welcomed former Arkansas guard Jackson Robinson from the transfer portal last week, making it his second off-season transfer to join BYU. He needs an exemption to qualify immediately, but there is a sense in the program that the NCAA recognizes.

Robinson is a high-risk, high-reward player. This is common later in the transfer cycle. He has already been a two-time transfer student and his experience at the college level is limited. His length and size (6 feet-6, 185 lbs) are theoretically converted to BYU’s system. However, he is still a project at the age of 19 and has played only 30 college games.

According to 247Sports, Robinson, who graduated from high school, was one of the top 70 players in the country. He reclassified during the senior season and joined Texas A & M early on. After spending a year at College Station, the program was overemployed in his position and kicked him out.

At Arkansas, Robinson had a hard time cracking the rotation of the elite eight team. He played a little over 10% and didn’t play in 17 games. Robinson entered the portal when Razorbucks added five transfers this offseason and three of the top 15 high school freshmen.

Robinson’s late addition continues the trend by Mark Pope’s head coach staff to add players later in the cycle. Last year BYU senior security guard Te’Jon Lucas committed in May. Alex Barcello was another slow transfer.

However, if the transfer period is late, it will be difficult to acquire excellent personnel on the transfer portal.

Robinson is considered an excellent archer with athletic ability. Still, his attacks during the first two years of his career were inconsistent and relied heavily on three-pointers. His high turnover also makes it difficult for him to latch at either stop.

Reorganization of the athletic club

BYU announced on Tuesday that athletic director Tom Holmoe had reorganized the division as he was preparing to join the Big 12 next year.

Holmoe has nominated David Almodova, Dallan Moody and Trevor Wilson as Senior Associate Athletic Directors. All of this will be reported directly to him. Tyson Hutchins is a new Associate AD that oversees creative strategy.

“Preparing for the jump to the Big 12 is not just the responsibility of our student athletes and coaches,” Holmo said in a news release. “All members of our BYU management, part-time, and even student staff are essential and are required to step up with structures and resources to help us do our best. These changes at the top of our leadership structure prepare us for success as we aim to enter the Big 12 in a strong position. “
