Ring nights are notoriously tricky for the defending champion, an emotional event that overshadows the basketball game at hand.

In the grand scheme of things, being the defending champion is more satisfying than winning one regular season game. But a win is more important to actually defending that title or starting a championship chase of its own. That’s what Juan Toscano Anderson has in mind for opening night.

A year ago, the Lakers had the chance to start the season against the very same Warriors. This was their chance to cap off a controversial offseason with a big win. Instead, Carmelo’s Anthony pumpfakes his free throw and the Lakers take his double-digit lead, and things only get worse from there.
The Lakers aren’t expected to win the rematch, but there’s an opportunity there to flip the script and set a better tone for the 2022-23 season. Winning an acquittal against Golden State’s high-calibre team would set the mood right from the start. This is something Toscano Anderson does not take for granted.
“If you go out there and get the ring and win and you’re happy with the win itself, you’ll feel better, but go ahead with the season with confidence. Beating Golden State. They’re a great team. They’re champions. So to get the ring and enjoy it with my family and top it off with a win in Golden State is nothing more than fun.”
Whatever the outcome, it will be a good night for Toscano-Anderson. But getting his new team in the spotlight would be the ultimate triumph.
