Keeping winning teams together ‘hardest thing’ in sports, Bob Myers believes

Bob Myers knows winning an NBA championship is tough, but says it’s an even more complex challenge.

speak to reporters next Sunday Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins contract extensionsthe Warriors general manager shared why keeping the core intact is the most difficult aspect of the sport.

“I always tell people that the hardest thing in this business and in professional sports is to put something together. I don’t know if you really understand.”

Building and maintaining a successful team and formula is already difficult in itself. Add in a very short window of success and it becomes an almost impossible task to maintain success.

Warriors core Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have been together for over a decade and are currently the longest-serving trio in the NBA. The trio reached incredible peaks (in eight years he won four of his NBA titles) and bounced back from bottom (he lost in the NBA Finals in 2016).

Despite career ups and downs, Curry, Thompson and Green are catalysts for Warriors dynasty, even if Myers hesitates to call Golden State’s success is a dynasty.

Myers added that because the NBA is in an era of “player empowerment” and players have unprecedented freedom to determine their own destinies, maintaining a successful core will be much more difficult.

“Keeping the same group of people functioning at a high level is literally the hardest thing in the world, paying attention to players, having money, getting short NBA contracts, working with players and taking what they deserve. We’re looking for the best though, and for them we’ll move through free agency or trade,” Myers continued.

Finally, Myers said that while relationships within the Warriors have been “tested,” Golden State is doing its best to protect the fabric of its culture and keep its core intact.

“Like any relationship, 100% hit and test and see if you can fix that problem,” he concluded.
