Kentucky star Oscar Tshiebwe set to earn $500,000 during team’s trip to the Bahamas

This is the Kentucky Men’s Basketball Team’s third exhibition in the Bahamas, and the second in four years.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tshiebwe currently holds a student visa, which limits her ability to appear in promotional content for the NIL trade in the United States. But Tshiebwe figured out a way around it, per report, and will have earned a total of $2.75 million in NIL trading by the end of the weekend. Not participating in games, practices or other team activities this week, Tshiebwe spends his free time in the Bahamas reading ads, signing merchandise and taking photos. Per his athletics, he did some promotional work with four different companies before unpacking his suitcase on Monday, and the next day he did a photo shoot for a pizza company, and after practice he did two more. The 6.9-foot forward earned all six NCAA-recognised POY awards after a successful junior season averaging 17.4 points, 15.2 rebounds (national high) and 1.8 steals per game. Tshiebwe told The Athletic that having the opportunity to make money felt like “God opened the door” for opportunities to help his family and others.

“I found that my mother was living in the worst conditions. They were living like animals,” he said in an interview. “I trusted God and worked. God changed their living situation. I am very happy. I can take care of my mother and take care of my brothers and sisters.” Now I’m not worried: “I have no money. How can I help them?”

In the same interview, he said the last time he went home he was able to help more than 1,000 orphans. One of his motivations for continuing to work hard while in the Bahamas is to make more children feel and be able to earn more money to send them to school for free.

Next up is a game against Mexican college team Tec de Monterrey on Thursday. No games on Friday, but the action continues this weekend as they face Carleton University (Canada) on Saturday and the Bahamas National Team on Sunday.
