Lakers vs. Hornets Final Score: Lakers fall in sudden death double OT

JT Thor’s three-pointer in the second play of double overtime gave the Hornets a sudden death victory over the Lakers on Sunday 89-86.

In a clear homage to the actual Lakers last season, the Summer League Glakers blew multiple leads at night when they fell to 0-2 in Las Vegas.

Two free throws, the Mason Jones Gorehead 3 pointer with 15.4 seconds left in the first overtime and the Cole Swider with 8.5 seconds left, seemed to have sealed the Lakers contract, but from Ty-Shon Alexander’s Nate Pierre Lewis. The three-pointer with 4.3 seconds remaining in the foul allowed the Hornets to tie the game.

Jones’ potential game winner missed the buzzer to set up a second overtime session. Scotty Pippen Jr. had a chance to win it to open the period, but airballed three pointers and set the winner of Thor.

Let’s take a look at three big points from the game.

Scotty Pippen Jr. continues to be impressed

The more Pippen Jr. plays this summer, the more prominent he will be. He can score on multiple levels and can also control the attack. He has a general sense of the game that he can’t teach and is actually starting to claim potential minutes with his parents Lakers Next season.

Max Christie’s best show

Summer Leauge doesn’t handle Christie well, whether in San Francisco or Las Vegas. But Sunday was the best match he has ever experienced and easily marked his best ball stretch. Christie made the first two shots of the game and mixed them in the defensive stop.

He flashed more touches in the middle game by knocking down the floater, but still struggled to finish consistently. He was still a lot impressed with the defense, but it was nice to see him mixed in with some strong attacks, even for a moment.

Man, sweeper can shoot

Again, this isn’t breaking news, it’s always been the theme for the Lakers in the Summer League. But Swider is absolute cash out of range. On Sunday, he hit a pair of three pointers in the fourth quarter of close quarters, the latter being fouled.

He crossed the arc at 19 points and finished the night 5-8. The team’s two-way signature — Swider and Pippen Jr. — has been a positive sign for the Lakers so far this summer and continues to be two prominent figures.
