The Lakers took the lead in the first quarter, largely thanks to Patrick Beverley’s defensive effort and Lonnie Walker IV’s offensive efficiency. He was a defensive irritant who smoothed the ball with five assists, deflected passes and grabbed four defensive rebounds. Ronnie Walker got off to a perfect start from the floor as he scored 11 points as he went 3-3, 3 to 2-2 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line.
The second quarter is a strength for the Lakers, and Sunday was no exception. Los Angeles won the quarter 29-24 and led by 9 in the first half. One of the things that worked this quarter was the connection between Russell Westbrook and Wenen Gabriel. The two hooked up several times on Friday and carried that momentum into Sunday’s game, working well with each other in pick-and-roll action.
It’s no secret that the Lakers are struggling in the second half. How did the Lakers deal with the Nets in the third round with a 9-point lead going into the quarter?
They lost the quarter 31-25, which was an improvement given how poorly they played to the start of the second half. Anthony Davis was aggressive and off the field he scored his 15th in his third at 5-8. The Nets continued his 11-0 run and cut the lead to his 5 thanks to Kevin Durant hot off his 3. AD was a shortrunner to stop the bleeding and the Lakers finished 80-77 in fourth place.
Up 3-3, the lead for Purple and Gold was far from secure. They started without an AD on the court and were able to get through those few minutes. How could they beat the Nets without LeBron or AD on the court? Russell Westbrook. He did an empathetic slam dunk. Troy Brown Jr. took advantage of his pass to Russ and hit his 3, and Russ freed his throw to hit his second. It’s been said before and I have to say it again. Westbrook has been productive on the bench and has done everything expected of him at this point in his career.
It was clear the Lakers had the advantage when Davis returned, and only Kevin Durant could have changed the fate of this game, but he didn’t. If you can, Los Angeles can satisfy you for at least one night.

We had to assume that the Lakers would historically go bad from the 3rd and eventually return to average. On Sunday, they did just that, shooting 40% of him from downtown.
