Larry Bird led the Celtics past the Lakers in a burning hot Boston Garden on this date in 1984

Larry Bird helped the Boston Celtics beat the Los Angeles Lakers 121-103 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The victory gave Boston a 3-2 series lead.

The temperature inside the Boston Garden was 97 degrees, so home court advantage played a big role in the game. The Celtics were used to playing in the heat, but the Lakers weren’t.

Bird finisalong with 34 points and 17 rebounds. Dennis Johnson scored 22 points, Kevin McHale finished with 19 points and rebounded 10 from the bench.

“I love playing in the heat,” Bird said.

Magic Johnson finished with 10 points and 13 assists for the Lakers. Kareem Abdul Jabbar finished with 19 points, but struggled in the heat and struggled from the field. He went 7-25 in a field goal attempt.

The Celtics won the NBA Finals in seven games.
