Thomas was one of two NCAA Women of the Year nominees from the University of Pennsylvania. Tennis player Iuliia Bryzgalova has also been nominated.

According to the NCAA website, if one of the two candidates is a “colored student athlete or international student athlete,” the school can nominate two individuals for the award.
