Massachusetts Basketball Adds Kellogg To Coaching Staff

Amherst, Massachusetts. University of Massachusetts Men’s Basketball Head Coach Frank Martin announced Wednesday it was adding Derek Kellogg to his staff as an assistant coach, but is waiting until a background check is completed. He was named an All-Atlantic 10 player for Men.

Kellogg led the Minutemen to the 2013-14 NCAA Tournament, marking their first bid for Massachusetts since the 1997-98 season. The team earned the No. 6 seed after starting the year with a 16-1 record and up to 12th place in the national rankings en route to a 24-9 record in the regular season. Kellogg helped the Minutemen achieve his three 20-win seasons as head coach and helped the team finish with his 25-12 record in the 2011-12 season, earning him the team’s first post since 2008. We reached the mark first as we marked out for the season. They made it to the semi-finals, becoming only the fourth team in NIT history to reach the semi-finals in three consecutive road games.

“It has been four months since I was here, and in our vision to connect the past with the present and connect UMass basketball to success, the last thing I thought was available in this moment. We will be able to hire Derek Kellogg as a member of our staff,” said Martin. “Derek is a highly accomplished coach in the industry and has provided us with the ability to connect, continue to grow and make the UMass basketball family as special as he has lived his life as a player and as a coach. I feel lucky to have you.”

Kellogg arrived at LIU Brooklyn in 2017-18 and led the team to the 2018 NCAA Tournament after securing an automatic bid in the NEC Tournament Championship. His team at LIU has finished above .500 in four of his five seasons at the helm.he picked up 200th February 2020 career coaching winner.

As a UMass player, Kellogg won four Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles and was part of a team that compiled a 111-24 record in four years under John Calipari. The Minuteman made his four NCAA Tournament appearances in 1991-95, including his Eight appearances in the Elite in the 1994-95 season. Kellogg was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic three times, and from 1994 to 1995 he was third in his team’s All-Conference and he earned A-10 All-Tournament team honors.

Kellogg secured his first assistant coaching position with George Mason in 1997 and spent a year at Youngstown State University before joining the Calipari staff in Memphis from 2000-2008 and making the 2008 All-American I helped coach the Tigers in the championship game.
