Mississippi State Transfer Alyza Winston Joins Women’s Basketball

Fort Myers, Florida. – The FGCU Women’s Basketball Team today added another high-level transfer signer. Alyza Winston (Muskegon, Michigan / Muskegon HS / Michigan / Mississippi) Participation in Eagles announced by head coach Karl Smesco today. Winston moved to Mississippi this January, but was only eligible to practice after two seasons of hard play, starting as a starter in 2020-21 and in Michigan in 2021-22.

“Ariza is a skilled and talented player. She is a very good shooter and a proven scorer for high levels of competition,” Smesco said. “She should be really good at our playing style. She’s Ariza fast and she loves to play in transitions.”

Along with Spartan, she started all 10 games played to start this past season, averaging 12.2 points and 3.0 assists before the transfer. She recorded in less than 27 minutes, shooting .425 from her floor. Winston launched a breakout sophomore campaign in 2019-20, averaging 11.1 points, 2.0 assists and 1.1 rebounds per contest to become a full-time starter. Her 5’7 guard scored double digits 23 times in her career, but she surpassed 15 points in 11 of these games. She has a career of 44% from the field and 73% from the charity stripes.

She posted the best 25 points of her career as a sophomore to Iowa (12/12/20), going from the floor with 6 3 pointers to 9-of-17. She also scored 20 points in Minnesota (12/9/20), after which she recorded 23 points and a career-leading 7 rebounds against Pennsylvania State University in a big tent tournament.


Prior to college, Winston played for Rodney Walker at Muskegon High School, leading the team to the semifinals of Class A, averaging 24.7 points, 3.3 steals and 3.2 assists as seniors. Winston, a four-star rookie and ranked 68th in the 2019 class, was also named to the 2019 Detroit Free Press Dream Team that season.


As a junior, she led Muskegon to the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history. She averaged 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 steals during the junior campaign.


Throughout her high school career, she won national honors in 2018 and 2019 in a row, as well as all conferences and district honors. Winston has hosted offers from high school graduates such as Kentucky, Rutgers, West Virginia and De Paul.


Winston will join Sha Carter from the University of Walsh and Uju Ezeudu from the University of Denver as pre-announced newcomers for the upcoming season. Carter was Walsh’s highest scorer in history and was the fastest pioneer to reach 1,000 career points (73 games), three times in All-American and two times in the All-Summit League.


Ranked 20th in the final WBCA vote of the season, the FGCU set a 30-3 overall record between 2021 and 22 after advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. It has participated in the Eagles NCAA tournament eight times and five times in a row over the last 11 years. Green and Blue won the 9th ASUN Championship title and won the berth, with 30 victories achieving their fifth milestone in the last eight seasons.

Coach Smesco
FGCU Head Coach Karl Smesco He holds a record of 610-128 (.826) throughout his career. This is the third highest win rate among active Division I coaches after UConn’s Geno Auriemma and LSU’s Kim Mulkey. He also led the Eagles to the 232-18 (.930) mark in ASUN regular season play and the 30-2 (.933) record in ASUN tournament play. Over the last 10 seasons, he has led the FGCU to a record of 153-5 (.968) in conference play in six undefeated seasons. The 12 ASUN Coaches of the Year have led the program to a 12-straight 25-win season and 18 consecutive 20-win campaigns. This includes more than 30 wins five times in the last eight years. In addition, the Eagles have been 549-101 (.845) since Smesco started the program in the 2002-03 season, with the highest winning percentage of .845 in green and blue ever in the NCAA Division I.
