One of the most frustrating things to note about the NBA is that after a team escapes at a turnover, instead of going to a fast break and seeing a highlight dunk, the opposing team commits a foul and ceases ownership. .. It’s a momentum killer and removes some of the excitement from the action. However, for the 2022-23 season, the league has agreed to change the way migrations are handled.

league publication On Tuesday evening, the Board approved a proposal from the Competition Commission on stricter penalties for transitional fouls in force for the 2022-23 season. This change gives the offensive team one free throw and possession of the ball if the defensive team commits a take foul. The attacking team can also choose a player to throw a free throw, just as the G League would take a foul. The player who commits the take foul will be given a personal foul for that play.

Previously, if the opposing team committed a take foul, the attacking team was given the ball out of bounds, which is a significant change for the next season. Take fouls are commonly used in leagues as a way to block fast break opportunities and are smart fouls from a strategic point of view. But it also relieves defense by stopping play.

In addition to changing the take foul rules, the Governors’ Association has also approved the inclusion of play-in tournaments for future seasons. The format follows an iteration before teams finishing 7th to 10th in each meeting compete for the last two playoff spots in each meeting.

This approval is not surprising given how exciting the Play-in Tournament has been in each of the last two years. In the first year of play-in, we Memphis Grizzlies When Golden State Warriors, Ja Morant and Grizzlies sent Stephen Curry and the Warriors to home packing. This past season with Patrick Beverley Minnesota Timberwolves Celebrated their play-in victory over- Los Angeles Clippers Just as they won the championship. Since its inception, Playin has been working on making games towards the end of the season and has given more teams incentives for tanking, so the league wants to keep it. It makes sense.
