NBA Free Agency: Options if Jalen Brunson opts to leave Dallas

On Monday we talked about opportunity cost Give Jalen Brunson a blank check.. Today, I’ll discuss some options in case either Branson or the team decides to farewell.
As I see, there are two main options.

Option 1: Clear the deck

If Branson walks for any reason, Mavericks will be given the opportunity to clear the deck and press the reset button.

Mavericks Trade-Tim Hardaway Jr./Davis Bertans / Josh Green

Lakers Trade-Russell Westbrook

Why does the Lakers do that? They get a couple of rotation players. Hardaway Jr. and Bertans’ ability to open the floor around Lebron and Anthony Davis will bring a breath of fresh air to the Lakers. They can also keep the 2027 pick and attach it to either THJ or Bertans on subsequent moves. The biggest obstacle to Westbrook’s trading is finding a team that matches the salaries needed to make money. Dividing Westbrook’s contract into two smaller contracts opens up many options for the Lakers.

Why does the Mavericks do that? Bertans was the seventh man in the postseason, and he was forced to act due to lack of other credible options. Hardaway Jr.’s shooting helps, but he’s responsible for the defense. Mavericks’ improved D relies on its ability to perform sound defensive turns and contain dribble penetration. Hardaway Jr. is struggling in both areas. In the long run, it will release a ton of cap space in the summer of 2023.

  • Mavericks will have Luka and Dorian Finney-Smith sign a long-term contract
  • Spencer Dinwidy and Reggie Bullock will enter the final year of their deal
  • Mavericks will have full bird rights to Christian Wood and the ability to resign him to a market value deal

After the 2023 draft, the Mavericks had their last pick Knicks I have told you. You can also have both players in the season, depending on how you play from 2022 to 2023. If Christian Wood’s situation goes wrong, they can waive his rights and have as much as 40 million cap spaces to go star hunting. Luka / Dinwidy /DFS/ Bullock / Star Player X core will probably have an advantage over the current roster.

Of course, this plan depends on Maverick’s ability to seduce star-free agents. Remember that the Mavericks had commitments from both Chris Paul and Dwight Howard before Howard chose to sign a deal with Magic and ruined everything. If Paul and Howard join Dallas at the peak of their power, we’ll probably see the last decade quite differently. Dallas also hired Nico Harrison for his influence and league-wide ties. Free agents will be the time to enable their influence to bear fruit. Finally, the situation in Dallas this time is very different. After that, players had to decide if it was worth signing up to play with a dilapidated superstar in Dirk. Currently, the Mavericks have superstars who have not yet reached their physical peak. It’s a much easier sale.

Option 2: Sign and Trade

Mavericks Trade-Jalen Brunson

Knicks Trade-Cam Reddish, Nerlens Noel, Mavericks 2023 Round 1 Pick

Why does Knicks do that? Currently, Knicks does not have enough cap space to give Branson a contract from $ 25 million a year. They tried to trade with Evan Fournier but couldn’t find his taker. Thunder is always ready to receive a bad salary, but he almost certainly demands a first round pick to do so. The first round pick may not be sufficient due to the remaining contract period of Fournier. The reddish Chibodo’s marriage has failed and his departure from New York seems imminent.

Why does Mavericks do that? We will regain the picks of the first round and have immediate access to all future draft topics. Once the stars were available, they would have been able to compete with other teams in terms of draft capital. Redness is just a lottery ticket. If he plays well, he can move him to the deadline. If not, you can easily proceed after the season. More importantly, Mavericks will be in the best position to trade for a superstar for a long time.
