New Mexico State University basketball player Mike Peake identified as injured student deadly shooting On the campus of the University of New Mexico over the weekend, according to NMSU.

New Mexico State Police said in a news release that Peak was targeted by 19-year-old UNM student Brandon Travis and killed after exchanging gunfire with Peak.

Clashes at UNM’s main campus in Albuquerque occurred around 3 a.m. Saturday, police said. Travis was pronounced dead at the scene. Peake was hospitalized but is expected to recover, NMSU Vice President Justin Bannister told his CNN.

New Mexico State Police allege that Travis conspired with a 17-year-old woman and two male friends, all UNM students, to lure Peake to the UNM campus and assault her.

According to police, Travis confronted and shot Peake, and while the woman and two other men fled the scene, Peak, who was armed, also shot Travis.

According to NMSU, after the shooting, Peak called some of his teammates and notified members of his basketball coaching staff. As a result, it was postponed.

The female suspect was later arrested, placed in a juvenile detention center and charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy, police said. Her name has not been released. Two other men have been identified, and the police department says it will work with the district attorney to determine the charges they may face.

No charges have been filed against Peake after the shooting.

A female suspect told investigators that Travis said he wanted to “jump” the peak. NMSU said it was aware of the brawl that occurred at that game and that the incident was referred to the dean’s office for further investigation.

According to information provided by NMSU, the student code of conduct prohibits “the possession, use, or distribution of weapons on college property or sponsored college activities.” The school has said it has not previously checked student-player bags before boarding the team bus, but will do so in the future.

Bannister said the NMSU Aggies plan to resume the basketball season on Friday with the Las Vegas Holiday Classic tournament in Nevada.
