An exciting month of play changed everything about how people remember Hubert Davis’ first season at the helm in North Carolina.

That’s why the Tar Heels started this year as the #1 ranked team in the nation.

The Tar Heels made a feverish run into the NCAA Championship Game as the No. 8 seed after a bubble team suffered inconsistent play and a crushing loss in the Major Stick Games in February. Four starters are back from a team that showed the best potential.Meanwhile, Davis has replenished a roster that relied heavily on the starting lineup of the ending “Iron Five” last year.

Returning starter RJ Davis even quipped “championship or bust” when discussing his mindset.

“I don’t care if they say so,” said Hubert Davis. “For me, I don’t see it that way. , I think everyone would say last year was a successful year…. My hope for this year is that this year’s team will reach its full potential.”

Following retired Hall of Famer Roy Williams, Davis has never changed his goal of contending for the championship. Amid the ups and downs of his last year, he has remained positive while saying he believes in his team.

Then there was an unexpected win for Duke at the spectacle of retired Blue Devils Hall of Famer Mike Krzyszewski’s final home game. A wild NCAA second round overtime victory over reigning champion Baylor. His tense Sweet 16 standoff with UCLA and his 15th-seeded tournament rampage against his darling St. Peter’s reached his record-breaking 21st final his Four.

Once there, the Tar Heels defeated the Blue Devils again in the epic third meeting that marked their first NCAA tournament meeting and closed Krzyzewski’s career. After putting up 16 points, they lost the lead in a game that ended with a desperate 3-pointer that missed Caleb Love, who forced overtime in New Orleans.

Outside shooting big man Brady Manek is gone. However, double-double machine Armando his Baco is back in the post and Leaky Black is back as the team’s top defender, Davis playing alongside his Love’s backcourt.

When the Tar Heels lost the title game one last time, the core of that group propelled them the following season to the program’s sixth NCAA championship in 2017.

Davis was Williams’ assistant at the time. he wants to repeat

“We want to write our own story,” said Love. I am more motivated than ever to get things done.”

He also became the first player in the same NCAA Tournament to post six double-doubles, including 15 points and 15 rebounds against the Jayhawks despite an ankle injury.

Possibility to change the game

Nance’s debut

After finding a successful transfer portal with Manek, the Tar Heels returned and lured Pete Nance from Northwestern.

The 6-foot-10 graduate led the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding and 3-point percentages. The latter part is particularly important given that it fulfilled an important part of

Nances aren’t as prolific as Manek on the outside, but their longer lengths can make them a more defensive aid on the inside.
