The NCAA introduced a forwarding portal on October 15, 2018, providing athletes with a way to explore their options. Players do not need to ask the coaching staff for permission to transfer. It just requires you to enter a name for compliance. It usually takes 24-48 hours for the player to follow the request. The school is free to contact the player without any restrictions once the name appears on the portal.

Players who enter their name in the transfer portal mean they will consider the option, but not necessarily leave. Players are free to withdraw their name at any time. However, the school is not obliged to keep players on scholarships once they enter the portal.

Recently, the NCAA forwarding portal has been controversial over the intersection with the NIL. Littrell was one of the coaches who spoke with Chris Hummer at 247Sports. Concerns about how the combination of portal, NIL, and NCAA one-off forwarding policies can create a basis for settings like a free agency that facilitates tampering.

Ritrel revealed that there were multiple cases early in the off-season when a coach he considered a friend tried to get a player out of the roster. North Texas has largely evaded efforts. However, advances made to players who have not yet joined the transfer portal mean that the industry is shifting to ritrel. NCAA rules prohibit a school from contacting a player from another school if the portal does not have a name.
