Rep. Dusty Johnson introduces ‘Mount Rushmore Protection Act’ after ex-NBA player calls to retire phrase

FOX EXCLUSIVE: South Dakota Republican Rep. Dusty Johnson on Friday introduced a bill to protect the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Former NBA player ESPN analyst Jaylen Rose drops the use of “Mount Rushmore” when listing the greatest players of all time over allegations of being “aggressive.”

According to a press release from Johnson’s office, the Mount Rushmore Conservation Act uses federal funds to “alter, alter, destroy, or remove any of the likenesses, names, or faces of Mount Rushmore National Monument.” is prohibited.

“The four Mount Rushmore presidents defended the cause of freedom,” Johnson told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“Our country has an imperfect past, but the call Cancel Mount Rushmore not advance our country. My laws ensure the protection and beauty of Mount Rushmore for generations. ”

‘Mount Rushmore’ term is ‘offensive’ and should be ‘retired’, says ESPN’s Jalen Rose

The bill was introduced in response to a video Rose posted on social media earlier this month. The former NBA player has called on the public to “use ‘Mount Rushmore’ to retire” when listing the all-time greats of sports, music and entertainment.

Rose pointed out the recent name change of Washington Commanders The Cleveland Guardians refer to the original name as “offensive.”

“Why do you think Washington changed its name from the Redskins? I was doing the show and didn’t say that word for eight years,” he said. “Because it’s offensive. What about the Cleveland Indians? Same thing, why did they change their name? Because it’s offensive.”

Washington scrapped the former name in July 2020 after decades of complaints that it was offensive to Native Americans. The organization has chosen to use the name Washington Football Team as a placeholder. In February, the organization revealed the commander as the official team name.
