South Carolina’s Dawn Staley defends canceling BYU series over unfounded racial slur allegation

south carolina Women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley took a stand late last month when a BYU fan was accused of throwing racial slurs at a female Duke volleyball player.

Gamecocks has canceled a two-game series against BYU Women’s Team In retaliation for the alleged defamation. However, BYU found no evidence that the volleyball player had been racially abused.

Staley on Wednesday defended the decision to remove the game from the schedule for this year and next year. He said

BYU Completed Investigation We participated in the allegations of defamation and announced the results of our investigation on September 9.

Staley also released a statement.

“I will continue to stand my ground. After a personal inquiry, I made the decision for the well-being of the team. My university, director of athletics, Ray Tanner, and others have made the decision that I I regret getting caught up in the criticism of the choices I made,” she said.
