The San Antonio Spurs selected Tim Duncan with the first pick of the NBA Draft on this date in 1997

The San Antonio Spurs won a big hit when they won the 1997 NBA Draft lottery.

They ended up with a record of 20-62 last season as David Robinson missed most of it due to a back injury. Despite the bad records of the three teams, the Spurs won the lottery and used picks from Wake Forest to Tim Duncan.

Big Man played in the Wake Forest for four seasons, leading to a smooth transition from college to the NBA. He won the New Face Award in 1998 and formed Instant Chemistry with Robinson.

The pair led the Spurs to their first championship on June 25, 1999, just two years after Duncan was drafted.

The Spurs dynasty’s dream came true when he won the lottery and soon chose Duncan, who became one of the NBA’s most dominant players.
