There are reasons to believe Jones might let it ride this season and forego the trade deadline

We’re entering a season where we really learn how general managers perceive basketball teams. He is a month away from the trading deadline on Thursday, February 9, when the buyer and seller will be revealed. We are all excited to see what the 20-20 will bring Phoenix Suns let’s do it.

It’s been a season of turmoil for the majority of NBA teams so far. The standings are always in flux, and given the fact that 10 of the 14 teams in each conference make it to the postseason (playoffs or play-ins), there are still a significant number of unconfirmed transactions.

Play-in tournaments have changed the way trade deadlines are enforced. The general manager has a hard time deciding whether he is a buyer or a seller in this market. Coming into the game he is the 11th seed and play-in when he’s half out of the game it’s hard to cash in chips and try to reset.

One question that I have been thinking about consistently is whether James Jones can simply ride this season. A deal with Jae Crowder should definitely happen in the future. A physical veteran leader with the appeal of having his contract expired. But so far, it hasn’t been worth it enough for the team to offer a trade that will please those James Jones appreciates.

The franchise has been sold, but the signature has not yet been put to paper.Robert Thurber can decline any transaction. He feels like there are too many variables that are preventing Sands from being an active buyer.

The History of James Jones and Deadline

I know it’s frustrating to see the sun sitting on their hands. There are many opportunities to improve this team. Secondary shot creator. A true power forward. Backcourt depth.

History tells us that James Jones hasn’t been very aggressive with deadlines. Below are the moves he’s made since assuming full control of GM around the trade deadline.

  • 2020 (West 12th): Nothing.
  • 2021 (2nd Suns West): Cash milwaukee bucks For Tory Craig
  • 2022 (No. 1 Suns West): Trade Jalen Smith for a 2022 second-round pick Indiana Pacers For Tory Craig.exchanged cash for Washington Wizards for aaron holiday

Torrey Craig is currently on the Suns roster, making it impossible for James Jones to trade him for the third straight year.

In fact, The Champ shows the history of someone who rocks the ship on Deadline. A question as to why it continues to confuse the fanbase. In 2021, the team needed a massive backup and there were many on the market at the time. In 2022, we needed a shot creator (Eric Gordon*) for his unit on the bench. Neither of these needs were met.

*To be fair, there are rumors that Eric Gordon remains with the Rockets to this day and they are still demanding an unprotected first round pick in exchange for him.

As for Jones, I find it frustrating in the short term, but I always try to see what he’s doing through the lens of the long-term health of the franchise. is it? Do you think he’ll be playing with house money this year?

Advantages of riding

That’s probably it.Perhaps Jones sees this season as a chance to win Next Season. breath. I know it’s hard to digest. No one wants to hear that their team is focused on the future instead of the present. but, Arizona Diamondbacks It has been in its operational state since 2008.

For the franchise’s long-term success, it might be best to stick with the roster as-is (minus the Jay Crowder trade, of course). And maybe even short-term success.

Jones can keep his roster together and healthy and have a late-season surge that could lead to playoff success.

We all know what happens when we peak too early, right? Remember last season? The 64-win Suns were eliminated in the second round. Injury and fatigue hit them when it mattered most. vice versa, golden state warriors – A team that struggled with injuries throughout the 2021-22 regular season – made a big breakthrough when it mattered most.

Do you remember their expiry trades? GM Bob Myers he didn’t create one.

I don’t endorse this tactic, but it’s possible Jones is considering it. Can the Suns look at this season and just accept it as is? If the end result is an early postseason exit, what’s the point of putting together a multitude of assets to acquire a mid-level player?

Let’s look at the last question.

The Suns have a number of players whose contracts expire at the end of this season. Jae Crowder ($10.3M), Dario Saric ($9.2M), Torrey Craig ($5.1M), Bismac Biyombo ($1.8M), Damion Lee ($1.8M) and Josh Okogie ($1.8M) are all unlimited free agents this summer am.

That adds up to $30 million off the books. The upcoming season will also be the last season before Devin Booker’s supermax goes into effect (2023-24 he’s $36 million, 2024-25 he’s $50 million). Chris Paul’s contract is $15.8M guaranteed.

The traditional idea is to trade a portion of your assets for a profit, rather than simply letting them sit. We think that’s what James Jones should do. Stack contracts to bring help to your team.

James Jones never does what we think we should do.

What’s the point of putting together a slew of assets to acquire a mid-level player if the end result is an early postseason exit? Maybe he’s trying to avoid handcuffing himself in the future by stacking the Crowder/Saric deal (outgoing $19.5 million) for . Dalio’s only attraction is the fact that his contract expires at the end of the year. He’s the worst man in the league for the rest of his career.

It’s debatable that Phoenix and James Jones have admitted to being who they are this season. If not, James could be waiting to save his assets and shove all his money into making a deep run in the free agent market rather than burn them off and land a new contract.

Who’s available in next season’s Unlimited Market? Kyrie Irving. D-Lo. Jerami Grant Miles Turner. Caris Levert. Will Burton. Josh Richardson. Reggie Jackson. Christian Wood. list Continue…

Devin Booker in his prime. Deandre Ayton is approaching him. Chris Paul has his feet out the door. The time to win is not necessarily now. 5 more years to go. Jones may be gearing up to make this franchise as financially flexible as possible.

Do you agree to let me ride? hell no. It’s the Kevin Durant situation again. We are waiting…and waiting…and waiting…nothing.

I’m tired of watching and waiting to see what Jones is going to do. It sucks to wonder if he has a long-term master plan for this franchise instead of acting “now.”It sucks that he can’t win Phoenix.

That’s where we are. I’m tired. The fanbase is fed up with the lack of improvement in James Jones’ roster. People constantly remind us of all the draft picks he missed. I was able to quiet those naysayers by bringing them to.

James isn’t just going to sit back and watch the Suns go from bad to worse just to increase the value of a 2023 first-round pick, right? • Are you hoping Henderson has a percentile chance and rides it out? This is 4D chess.

As always, we will continue to wait. The trading deadline is approaching. Based on his activity, we’ll see if #InJamesJonesWeTrust.
