Three takeaways from Maryland women’s basketball’s close win against Fordham

The Fordham Rams are the second of three Atlantic 10 teams Maryland will face this season. Terps had real competition from Rams in this $20,000 bigame, and it was a little closer than it should have been.

“We had to take ugly wins at times, but we were able to keep our composure and composure in that fourth quarter,” said Maryland head coach Brenda Freese. We know we can play, we have learned a lot of lessons and we can play against a veteran team and win.”

Return of the Diamond Mirror

Seventy minutes before tip-off, Diamond Miller shed her warm-up shirt to reveal her white No. 1 jersey with Maryland’s red letters on it, giving the first sign she’s playing. A spokesperson for the team later confirmed reports that she would be participating.

Miller finished the game with a 22-point double-double and a career-high 13 rebounds. Her first half consisted mostly of defensively pulling her rebounding down. At one point in the game she had her 7 of her 14 boards of Terps. She hit her 3-pointer that rang the buzzer, ending Terps’ terrible third quarter.

“Health is the motto of this season for me and all my teammates and all,” said Miller. “It feels so good to finish the game.”

Fordham kept it close

With four minutes left in the second quarter, Fordham was just four down and playing good basketball. A 9-0 run spanning 1:18 upset Maryland a bit. The Rams executed some quality midrange looks and really started to challenge Maryland in a low-scoring first half.

Fordham kept Maryland on heels defensively. With 1:20 left, Maryland was only three points up, and every time the Rams fired a shot, Maryland bounced the ball off the rim. After graduate guard Abby Myers hit a jumper off a Fordham turnover, the Terps registered no field goals in the final 3:03 of the play.

Myers’ performance in the first half was also a bit uncharacteristic of what fans have become accustomed to seeing from Ivy League transfers.

Maryland went 20-8 in the third quarter media timeouts. Fordham fought back, tying the game at 58 with less than a minute left in the quarter to take their first lead as the score was 4-2 at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter.

don’t touch the glass

Fordham’s one-point lead in the half was due to the lack of an offensive rebound from Maryland. In the first half he got only five and in the second quarter he got none. Terps had to capitalize on his chance point second during Fordham’s back-to-back attack, but it didn’t.

“Considering the fact that I showed a defensive box against South Carolina, tonight’s rebound was disappointing…so I thought it was still a hungry mentality to give up 17[offensive]boards,” Freese said. .
