Toledo earns women’s basketball Team of the Week honors after upset win

The Toledo Rockets earned NCAA.com Team of the Week honors and earned one of the biggest wins in program history on December 8. Beat No. 14 Michigan 71-68 at the Chrysler Center in Ann Arbor. Toledo already have the nation’s longest road winning streak going into Thursday’s game, now extending to 14 games.

The win was Toledo’s first victory over a ranked team since beating No. 20 Dayton on December 9, 2009. NCAA Tournament. The win was also the Rockets’ first win against his team in the Big Ten since his 69–58 win in Indiana on November 25, 2011.

Toledo trailed 69-68 against Michigan, but on the Rockets’ next possession, junior Sammy Mikonowitz rounded an inbounds pass and scored on two-fours. The Wolverines’ final shooting attempt missed and was rebounded by Mikonowitz. Mykonowitz iced the game with his two free throws to take the historic win.

Toledo shot 50 percent (26-52) from the floor against Michigan and was a perfect 12-12 from the free-throw line. Senior Sophia Weird scored her team-high 15 points on 4/6 shooting successes and her 3/4 3-pointer successes. Junior Nan Garcia added 14 points from the bench, along with 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Sr. Quinesharoquette scored her 12 points, had six rebounds, and wreaked havoc on the defense with four steals. Keragos and Mykonowitz both scored her 11 points, with Mykonowitz matching Garcia’s rebounding her total of seven.

Mid-American Conference preseason favorites Toledo followed up their win in Michigan with a 57-45 win at home to Dayton on Sunday, giving the Rockets their fifth straight win. The win ended his three-game losing streak for the Rockets against Dayton. Dayton has played in 15 straight games in the postseason and last season he won an NCAA Tournament game.

Toledo controlled the game from the start and led Dayton by double digits by the end of the first half. The Flyers cut the Rockets’ lead to his seven points midway through the third quarter, but didn’t come any closer. Dayton’s final total of 45 points is the second time this season that Toledo has held an opponent under his 50 points. Leading the pack on Sunday was Goss, who scored his career-high 16 points and scored in double figures for the sixth time this season.

Improving to 8-2 after two wins last week, Toledo lost only two back-to-back games against Duke and Penn State in the November season. The Rockets host Oakland and he will return to action on December 21st.
