Top teams hold serve, elite freshmen shine, major matchups await

Conference play is rapidly approaching. Already this month, several conferences (Big Ten, ACC, Pac-12, etc.) have him one or he two league games.

By the end of the month, the SEC will be playing its first conference game, so coaches will be finalizing rotations and fine-tuning their strategies to help their teams make progress in the second half of December.

That doesn’t mean we have to wait for more big-time games to come out, though. Kentucky went to London and beat Michigan over the weekend. We also have some interesting matches lined up for this Saturday.

Before that, let’s take a look at this week’s SEC Men’s Hoop Power Rankings.

14. Vanderbilt (4-4 overall, last week: 14)

Even beating Wofford by 3 at home wouldn’t be much of a change for the Commodores, especially after a midweek loss at VCU. Vanderbilt is in danger of dropping below .500 for the year when Pitt comes to town this Wednesday night. Before the SEC game starts, we’ll see if Jerry Stackhouse can steer this team in the right direction.

13. South Carolina (4-4, LW: 13)

The Gamecocks spent the week playing two “George” teams. First, they were completely destroyed by George Washington in his DC, losing 79-55. They then returned to DC for the weekend, defeating Georgetown 74-71 in overtime. GG Jackson showed why he’s a highly coveted recruit by dropping his 22 points and recording eight rebounds against the Hoyas.

See him while you can. He is almost certain to play in the NBA next year.

12. Texas A&M (5-3, LW: 9)

Aggies is one of the SEC’s most inconsistent teams. Talented, but sometimes they don’t get along. On Saturday, the Aggies were beaten 86-71 in a neutral site game against Boise State in Fort Worth. They made only 5 of his 21 3-point attempts (23.8%). If that doesn’t improve, Texas A&M will have a hard time beating Oregon this Sunday.

11. Ole Miss (6-2, LW: 10)

Starting 6-0, the Rebels lost their final two games against Stanford and Memphis. As with the Aggies before, Ole’s mistakes in the loss to the Tigers saw him struggle from three-pointers out of his line and from the Deep he made only 5 of 20 games (20%). Kermit his Davis and his company need to be on track against Valparaiso this week before UCF comes to town next week.

10. Georgia (7-2, LW: 11)

Mike White is playing competent basketball this year for the Bulldogs, an upgrade from last season. But in the next two games he can learn a lot about the Dawgs. First, they will make a short trip to Atlanta on Tuesday to take on rival Georgia Tech. Then, on December 18th, Holiday will face Notre Dame at the Hoopsgiving event, also in Atlanta. Will Atlanta do Georgia men’s hoop as kind to his team as it did to the Dawgs soccer team?

9. Florida (6-3, LW: 12)

Florida is back on track a bit after a rough trip to Oregon on Thanksgiving. is waiting for you. Then No. 5 UConn comes to Gainesville. Watch UConn’s star big man Adam Sanogo go up against Florida’s Colin Castleton. At the post he pitted two heavyweight fighters against each other? What’s not to love?

8. LSU (7-1, LW: 8)

A four-point win over UT Arlington in Baton Rouge doesn’t necessarily bode well for the Tigers, but a win is a win nonetheless. It is better to learn a lesson from victory than to lose. Holiday will see if he can clear things up, especially on the offense ahead of his Hoopsgiving event in Atlanta on Saturday and Wake his interesting game against Forrest.

7. Mississippi State (8-0, LW: 7)

Mississippi State’s 5th place in the NET rankings for the first time this season… seems high. really high:

The Bulldogs’ best wins were against Marquette or Utah, both at the Fort Myers tip-off. But Chris Jans delivered a convincing win for his team. The Bulldogs head to Minnesota this Sunday to see if Golden He can face the Gophers.

6. Kentucky (6-2, LW: 6)

Kentucky lost to both decent teams they played this year, falling to Michigan State and Gonzaga. But on Sunday, the Wildcats brought their talents to London with an exciting 73-69 victory over Michigan. Freshman Cason Wallace continues to develop into a leader on this team. He tied with Jacob Toppin to lead the Wildcats with 14 points on Sunday, adding eight rebounds, five assists, steals and blocks . See the confidence he showed with his game-defining 3-pointer.

Kentucky will play Yale 8-1 on Saturday. That matchup might be more fun than it looks on paper.

5. Mizuu (9-0, LW: 5)

The Tigers have given up the most points in the SEC in nine games, with their opponents scoring 664. However, they are still undefeated this year as they have the most points in the SEC. That puts him over 100 more points than Florida, his second-most points-scoring team in the SEC right now. What can I say about the Tigers, they are indeed playing an exciting brand of basketball under Dennis Gates right now.Rival Kansas is coming to Columbia on Saturday. If Mizzou can pull off that upset, fans might be ready to make a statue of him Gates.

4. Auburn (8-0, LW: 4)

The Auburn offense had its best performance of the year in Friday’s 93-66 win over Colgate. But now, the Tigers will face perhaps the toughest competition of the year when they head to Atlanta on Saturday and take on Memphis at his Hoopsgiving event on Holiday. Memphis has already kicked Vanderbilt and Ole Miss out of the SEC this season. The Tigers are trying to stop Memphis from improving to his 3-0 league record.

3. Arkansas (7-1, LW: 3)

Nick Smith Jr. appeared in Saturday’s second game of the season in a 99-58 win over San Jose State. This game fared much better than his first. He played 24 minutes and scored 16 points with 5 assists. His shooting and playmaking abilities are elite.

It’s a superstar in the making. The Hoggs will head to Tulsa for a game against UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night and Oklahoma on Saturday. We’ll see how much impact Smith makes in these competitions.

2. Tennessee (7-1, LW: 2)

Vols defense is elite. If the offense can continue to improve, Tennessee is a legitimate national title contender.Last week, the Vols destroyed her Alcorn State 94-40. They host Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday night, and it’s going to be very interesting after that. On Saturday, the Vols will take on No. 13 Maryland in Brooklyn. And next Saturday they head to Tucson to take on a tough Arizona team. These games have a very his March vibe.

1. Alabama (7-1, LW: 1)

Alabama is the #1 team in these power rankings for the second week in a row. The Tide has already defeated one of his No. 1 teams this year, beating North Carolina in Oregon on Thanksgiving. On Saturday, the Tide will head to Houston to face the Cougars’ current number one team. Could Nate Oates and company pull off another big win for their NCAA Tournament resume?
