Trey Galloway – The Daily Hoosier

The change in Indiana’s off-season roster regains the annual tradition of scrutinizing players who are expected to return to the program.

Next up is Trey Galloway, who is training in IU basketball for the third year.

2021-22 numbers

Galloway missed 15 games due to two different injuries. He had a broken wrist against St. Johns in November and a groin problem in February.

Overall, he played in 20 of the 35 contests and started 3 times.

The 6-foot-4 guard shot 46.4 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line, averaging 20.8 minutes per game. Galloway averaged 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and .9 steals per contest.

What worked

Galloway was very good at guarding from the 2-point range and made 56.5 percent of his attempts, even though the defense generally allowed a 3-point line. He has to earn everything in the arc and his ingenuity in painting with an array of floaters, reverses and baby hooks is high end.

Galloway is a versatile security guard. Not a real point, but he has above average ball handling skills and good court vision. Defensively he can defend multiple spots and become an asset of the system that emphasizes switching.

Culver, Indiana’s products emerged as a tough and physical defender in the second season of the program. He moved sideways well, gaining a reputation for blasting the ball screen, and Galloway showed great instinct in the overtaking lane. He was tied with the highest steal rate on the team. Most importantly, when he was healthy, Galloway was often part of Mike Woodson’s head coach lineup, ending the match.

Galloway has also proven to be a spark plug for Indiana. He played a major role in two games that marked his return from injury — against Ohio at his home, against Michigan in a big tent tournament — and IU won both contests. Did. Galloway was often part of the solution when the starting lineup struggled.

Off-season development needs

1. Surrounding shots. Elephants in Galloway’s room shot 3 to 21.4 percent of the past season, after making only 18.2 percent from long range as freshmen. In his career he is only 12-of-61 from behind. If looking for signs of encouragement, he made 5/17 (29.4%) to start the sophomore season, and even more impressive at 42.9% during the last AAU summer at the adidas circuit. bottom. Galloway does not have to be dominant and does not have to be large from 3, but it needs to reach about 35% to maintain floor expanse.

2. Stay in court. Whether fouled or injured, Galloway struggled to maintain his position in rotation. His 3.8 fouls per 40 minutes kept him off the court from 2021 to 22. He has experienced four or more fouls five times in 20 games. Of course, he also suffered two injuries. This is part of the story of the freshman season and high school days and can be a factor in shooting hardships. Many of the injuries and fouling challenges are related to his aggressive style. This is something you don’t want to dial back too much. However, the staff wants him to prepare his body to avoid problems like crotch tension.

3. Clean up your mistakes. Galloway style can also make mistakes when holding the ball. He posted a turnover rate of 22.8%. This is the best of the team’s regular rotation guards. And he had exactly the same rate a year ago. Again, Galloway offers advantages over the disadvantages of his aggressive nature, so some of these mistakes you just have to live. And since he spends a tremendous amount of time on the move, in the traffic, where mistakes occur, it has to do with the shooting struggle. But now, in a few years under his belt, Galloway needs to clean the miscue.

Success in 2022-23

With Parker Stewart and Rob Finize via the transfer portal, there is a clear path to Galloway to win spots in the starting lineup. However, Stewart was there because of his shooting ability, and it seems unlikely that Woodson would insert the suspect’s shooter in two or three positions. Again, Galloway needs to show staff who can make an open three high enough to keep their defenses honest.

The good news for Galloway is that it’s trying to stop two players on the same boat when it comes to shooting ability. Tamar Bates shot it well in high school, but she struggled as a freshman, and Jalen Hood-Schifino doesn’t arrive at the IU with a reputation as a high-level 3-point shooter.

Return to the first 6 minutes of the Indiana match in the northwest in February. At this time, Galloway scored 9 points, scoring from all three levels of the court in the process. His play in the game was enough for Woodson to change his only starting lineup for the season.

Galloway has such an offensive capability, but it must be consistently demonstrated to thwart some of the five stars on the border. Already a defensive star and energetic man, Woodson will find it difficult to get Galloway off the floor if he finds a versatile scoring rhythm.
