UNC Rewards Hubert Davis With New Contract, Raise

Chapel Hill, North Carolina — North Carolina has had no trouble paying its men’s basketball coaches Hubert Davis With a bolstered contract and a pay raise after his debut season at work created a magical ride to the NCAA championship game.

The new deal covers the next six seasons through 2027-28 and is worth approximately $16.7 million in total compensation, an increase of more than $6.5 million in packages over the life of the deal. He will receive $2.3 million in raises this season, rising to $3.1 million by his final year. Performance bonuses can add upwards of $1 million per season.

Davis signed a new contract on August 22nd, the terms of which will run until June 30th, 2028. Kansas’ Bill Self collected the most of any college basketball coach last season, at about $10.2 million a year, according to the USA Today database that tracks NCAA coaching contracts. Calipari ($8.6 million), Michigan’s Tom Izzo (about $8.34 million), Duke’s retired Mike Krzewski (about $7.35 million) and Villanova’s retired Jay Wright (about $6.2 million) continued.

North Carolina, this season’s preseason No. 1 team, will face Johnson C. Smith in an exhibition game on Friday night. The Tar Heels will begin his second season under Davis on November 7 against UNCW.

Davis, 52, played for the iconic Dean Smiths from 1988 to 1992, helping North Carolina to the Final Four in 1991 and ACC Tournament titles in 1989 and 1991. He scored his 1,615 points (his 11.8 points per game) in his 137 career games. Career 3-point holds his UNC record for his shooting percentage (43.5%). He earned his All-ACC honors for the second team as a senior after averaging 21.4 points per game from his 1991 to his 1992 season. After playing his 12 years in the NBA, he worked as a college basketball analyst at ESPN for seven years.
